Chris Paul is a (now) former NBA participant, who performed within the league for 21 seasons, earned 12 All-Star alternatives, and gained a number of Olympic Gold Medals. He performed on quite a few groups all through his profession, together with the Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, and—my private favourite—the San Antonio Spurs. On Friday, Paul introduced his retirement from the sport, earlier than jetting off to the NBA All-Star Weekend courtesy of AT&T. 

This interview has been edited.

Mark Stenberg: You introduced your retirement after 21 seasons final week. Why now? 

Chris Paul: It was time. I really feel like I had given all the pieces I may give to the sport. I joined the league after I was 19, and I’m 40 now. I’ve needed to be extra current for my household and be part of their day by day lives, and now I lastly get to try this. 

Mark: You partnered with AT&T through the All-Star Weekend, talking with two HBCU groups forward of their Friday night time matchup and taking pictures hoops with the Twitch streamer Clix. Why work with AT&T?

Chris: AT&T has really been part of my life and my household in a severe approach. My grandmother labored at AT&T for 30 years, and my dad labored there for 10 years. She labored the primary shift and he labored the second, and we had AT&T stickers round the home. Over the weekend the corporate gave me an AT&T basketball—I requested if I may hold it, to present it to my grandma, and my dad stored making an attempt to take it. 

Mark: You even have an HBCU connection I used to be unaware of. I knew you performed faculty basketball at Wake Forest, so I used to be shocked by your Winston Salem background.

Chris: Yeah I really graduated from Winston Salem in December 2022 with a level in communications. So when AT&T introduced out the groups from Hampton College and North Carolina A&T State for a recreation Friday night time, I acquired to talk with them within the locker room and speak to them in regards to the stage they have been going to play on. That was superb.
