If you have this new third-generation Apple Pencil, the Erase-O-Matic becomes useless, and that is because it comes equipped with sensors in the tip that can sample colors from just about any object. The patent sketches reveal that the Apple Pencil tip has both a light emitter and optical color sensor, the latter of which measures light for a different RGB channel.

Now the light emitter could have an adjustable light spectrum, enabling users to adjust it during the measurements. It would use the data collected, such as ambient light color measurements, to allow for these adjustments in real-time. The measurements would be transmitted wirelessly to a companion device such as an iPad Pro or possibly future touchscreen MacBook. There’s no word yet on when we’ll see a functional prototype.
