KDDI and QYSEA Develop the World’s First Sea-to-Air Drone, Complete with a 4K Camera – TechEBlog

KDDI QYSEA First Sea-to-Air Drone
Japanese telecommunications provider KDDI and QYSEA, a manufacturer of undersea robots, have partnered to develop the world’s first sea-to-air drone. This means that it can not only fly over water, but also dive underwater as well, all remotely piloted by an operator, while a 12-megapixel 4K UHD Camera with a 1/2.3-inch Sony CMOS sensor can relay information back to headquarters using KDDI’s mobile network. This drone can dive to a depth of up to 500 feet, boasting six degrees of freedom that enable the operator to seek out hard to reach areas. When in flight, distance and altitude lock systems ensure that it can adapt to unpredictable environments in real-time. Some practical applications include offshore wind power, where the drone can be deployed to perform complex inspections and maintenance work on its frames as well as foundations to vastly reduce human risks.
