DEFIANT X Long-Range Assault Helicopter Successfully Performs Technology Demonstration and Low-Level Flight Tests – TechEBlog

Lockheed Martin Sikorsky-Boeing’s SB>1 DEFIANT successfully completed FLRAA mission profile test flights, including a technology demonstration, confined area landings and low-level flight operations. If tests continue to go well, this aircraft will eventually replace the Black Hawk, especially since its coaxial rotors were able to achieve a top speed of 272 mph in level flight. This (272 mph) is not only about twice the speed of the average helicopter, but DEFIANT’s rear propulsor rotor enables it to rapidly decelerate by reducing forward thrust. This in turn also keeps the craft level while slowing down instead of pitching the nose up like a conventional helicopter, offering better visibility for the pilot. Other capabilities include greater than 60-degree banked turns and lifting a 5,300-pound Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System external load.
