Lockheed Martin’s F-117 Nighthawk may have been retired from combat use, but Northrop Grumman’s B-21 Raider is set to take over. The name pays tribute to the Doolittle Raids of World War II when 80 men and 16 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers participated in a mission that changed the course of World War II forever.
The B-21 will help the Pentagon modernize the three legs of its nuclear triad, including submarine-launched warheads as well as silo-launched nuclear ballistic missiles. This aircraft is capable of networking across the battle-space to multiple systems, and into all domains, while being supported by a digital ecosystem throughout its lifecycle that enables the B-21 to quickly evolve through rapid technology upgrades.
