First Look at Energy Observer 2, an Innovative Liquid Hydrogen-Powered Cargo Ship – TechEBlog

Energy Observer 2 Liquid Hydrogen Cargo Ship
We know that liquid hydrogen can be used as the fuel for an internal combustion engine or fuel cell, but the Energy Observer 2 is the first to use it to power a cargo ship. The company hired LMG Marin, the naval architecture firm that pioneered decarbonated propulsion and developed the world’s first liquid hydrogen ferry, Hydra, to head this innovative project. Maritime transport accounts for 3% of CO2 emissions annually on a global scale, and this ship contributes towards zero-emission for the transport of goods. Energy Observer 2 measures 120-meters long, 22-meters wide and has a 5.5 meter draft. As for the technical aspects, it boasts a RexH2 EODev 2.5 MW fuel cell, liquid hydrogen tanks (LH2) with 70 tons (1000 m3) good for up to 4,000 nautical miles, and 240 TEU (twenty feet equivalent) containers. Victorien Erussard, President and founder of Energy Observer, officially unveiled the ship on February 10th during the One Ocean Summit in Brest, France.

Energy Observer 2 Liquid Hydrogen Cargo Ship

With this demonstrator ship, we want to go all the way in decarbonizing medium-sized industrial ships, using hydrogen directly as a fuel. We believe in the capacity of the French maritime industry to become an international model, benefiting from an agile and efficient research-industry ecosystem. The adventure of hydrogen is above all a story of pioneers. With Energy Observer, we share this desire to push back the technological frontiers to take concrete action in the face of the climate emergency, said Matthieu Giard, Member of the Executive Committee in charge of Hydrogen activities, Air Liquide.
