Interesting Look at Bigfoot 5, the World’s Largest Monster Truck – TechEBlog

Bigfoot Worlds Largest Monster Truck Guinness World Records
Bob Chandler’s world record setting Bigfoot monster truck began its life as a Ford F-250 pickup in 1975, and was then updated to a newer body style during 1979. The 1979 Ford F-250 chassis was then modified with a military-surplus top loader featuring four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering that used 48-inch tires. However, it wasn’t until 1981 when it started to crush cars, first as a joke and then turned into shows. Read more for a video and additional information.

Aside from crushing cars, Chandler realized that his competitors were attempting to outdo him on the physical size of the vehicle, with many truck owners now self-proclaiming to have the “world’s largest monster truck”. This meant that Chandler had to outfit his “Bigfoot 4” vehicle with 10-foot-tall tires he had purchased from a junkyard owner in Seattle, for $1000, to reclaim the title for good. These tires were previously used by the US Army in Alaska on their overland train in the 1950s. “Bigfoot 5” was unveiled in 1986 and built specifically for these 10-foot-tall tires, earning him the title of “world’s tallest, widest, and heaviest monster truck” from Guinness Book of Records in 2002.
