Switzerland-based Destinus hopes to achieve this with their hypersonic unmanned cargo plane that could deliver various payload anywhere in the world in 1-2 hours. The aircraft comes equipped with two types of hydrogen propulsion: an air-turbo rocket (ATR) engine for take-off, landing, and acceleration to supersonic speed, while a cryogenic rocket engine helps it reach hypersonic speed at near-space altitudes. Hydrogen was selected as the energy source since it generates zero carbon emissions. When used as fuel, the only byproduct of hydrogen is water, which means that it can be re-split and used again for propulsion. The first prototype has already completed its first test flight, but a much larger second aircraft is set to be tested later this year.
