Long before Elon Musk’s Tesla, Inc. existed, there was Navlab, a series of autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles developed by teams from The Robotics Institute at the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University. Kicking things off, we have the Navlab 1, which is based on a 1986 Chevrolet panel van. It featured five racks of computer components, including three Sun workstations, video hardware, a GPS receiver, and a Warp supercomputer. Navlab 1 was followed by Navlab 2, built using a 1990 US Army HMMWV. Instead of three Sun workstations and a single supercomputer, this model boasted three Sparc 10 computers for high level data processing, along with two 68000-based computers designed for low level control. This military vehicle was capable of going off-road, but its speed was limited to a top speed of 6 mph. When on normal surfaces, it had a top speed of 70 mph.
