However, for mid-sized companies, getting this market share information can be very difficult, expensive and time-consuming. Enter Share of Search (SoS) as the new, digital way to estimate (future) market share.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Share of Search?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share of Search is a 12 month moving average of the searches on a brand\u2019s name compared to the same 12 month moving average of all the brands in the same sector. In layman\u2019s terms, \u201chow well is my brand doing in comparison to my competitor brands\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, in and of itself, \u2018how many people are searching for my brand versus others\u2019 is interesting, but it\u2019s not groundbreaking. What\u2019s really interesting is how well this metric maps onto market share. When you carry out this analysis for Fortune 500 companies whose market shares are well published, you find a strong correlation between the metrics. To be precise, Share of Search acts as a leading indicator of market share. If your share of search is higher than your market share, usually your market share (eventually) rises to match and vice versa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=x1zMufAs3l0\">(watch this introductory talk from 2020 for more details<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/darkroom.contagious.com\/1000\/72b46c9dfb0d6957e2bab89a009be80e:a5d879fc9af7c4847cfa34f251d819b8\/sosearch.jpg\" alt=\"Why share of search is a vital marketing metric | Contagious\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, at this point, it\u2019s important to state that no-one is saying that having a high level of brand searches causes you to increase your market share. Or indeed that you should target growing your brand searches. Instead, what this research implies is that when you are doing \u2018good\u2019 marketing activities \u2013 the kind of things that will improve your market share \u2013 the number of people searching for you also increases in step.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 987px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/6033eaaa62d69948ffd69343\/1616504437349-D1DSI34AQNNSXGFFZQ83\/Share+of+Search.jpeg\" alt=\"What creates a strong Share of Search? \u2014 Share of Search Council\" width=\"987\" height=\"526\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source: James Hankins &amp; Les Binets<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to use Share of Search<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share of Search is a strategic tool, not a tactical one. If you\u2019re one month into your campaign and are considering whether you want to change your targeting demographics then SoS can\u2019t help you. Instead, Share of Search is about looking at the big picture, the long term, the whole shebang. The best way to explain it is to look at some examples of how we\u2019ve used it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case Study 1 \u2013 To Demonstrate Progress<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first ideas we had for Share of Search was if we could use it to measure the impact of brand awareness campaigns. Typically, you have to report on clicks, impressions and engagement. However, those aren\u2019t really the main purpose of the campaign. You\u2019re really trying to improve brand salience and brand sentiment \u2013 the exact type of thing that SoS is great for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore we carried out a Share of Search analysis for one of our large, well-established clients as part of a post-campaign analysis to see if we actually had shifted the needle at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this instance, this generally this looks like quite a stable SoS, with very little movement being seen; this is to be expected of a \u00a36bn extremely mature market \u2013 no-one\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0gone bust and no new challengers have arisen. Having said that, if the SoS goes up in a period when you\u2019ve been launching a large brand awareness campaign, it\u2019s a pretty good indicator that it was a successful one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case Study 2 \u2013 Galvanise Activity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, sometimes you just need to do a strategy reset and work out where you actually sit in the market. We were able to use this as evidence that they needed to change their strategy of focusing on squeezing the sponge of that juicy bottom of funnel and instead prioritise securing that brand salience. Indeed, generally this analysis was a bit of a wake up call for them that action needed to be taken and soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summary<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share of Search is a quick and easy strategic tool that you should have in your metric wheelhouse. It doesn\u2019t solve everything and there\u2019s every chance that many times you\u2019ll likely look at it and see no interesting story as everything proceeds as expected.
