Q4 revenue of $17.8 billion saw the cloudy concern finish 2021 with receipts of $62.2 billion \u2013 38 per cent higher than its FY 2020 haul of $45.4billion. The 2021 total means AWS is now larger, measured by revenue, than established industry titans Lenovo, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/01\/25\/ibm_q4_2021\/\" rel=\"noopener\">IBM<\/a>, Cisco, Oracle, and HPE.<\/p>\n<p>The cloud giant&#8217;s run rate is now $71 billion a year \u2013 up from $51 billion this time last year.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_offprem\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YfzTLp6mMzhuN5xwsGbDtgAAAIc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_offprem\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YfzTLp6mMzhuN5xwsGbDtgAAAIc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Olsavsky attributed AWS&#8217;s growth to increasing the size of its sales force and extra marketing. The CFO also said the market has stabilized, with customers whose spending plunged in early 2020 now spending again. Supply chain issues aren&#8217;t expected to hinder growth, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The results announcement showed how important AWS has become to Amazon, in terms of generating income. For 2021 the entire Amazon business won revenue of $469.8 billion, which delivered operating income of $24.9 billion. AWS alone accounted for $18.5 billion of that.<\/p>\n<p>Do the math: $407 billion of Amazon.com business brought $6.4 billion of operating income, and the $62.2 billion of AWS revenue delivered the rest.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_offprem\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YfzTLp6mMzhuN5xwsGbDtgAAAIc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_offprem\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YfzTLp6mMzhuN5xwsGbDtgAAAIc&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Congratulations, AWS users: you made this possible.<\/p>\n<p>Another item of interest in Amazon&#8217;s results was the inclusion for the first time of a line item for advertising revenue \u2013 all $31 billion of it across FY 2021. That&#8217;s still a long way behind Facebook&#8217;s FY21 ad revenue of $115 billion or even the $61 billion Google scored through ads in Q4 2021 <em>alone<\/em>. But Olsavsky said the Amazon ads biz is now big enough that it deserves its own disclosure and discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Execs revealed that Amazon&#8217;s ads do best around Amazon&#8217;s big sales events such as Prime Day. What a lovely self-fulfilling prophecy!<\/p>\n<p>On the subject of Amazon Prime, the price of that package will rise, and we can blame J.R.R Tolkien. Execs said the forthcoming Amazon Prime Video show <i>Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power<\/i> is typical of the extra value Amazon has packed into the service over the years.
