The PM also said the digital currency will be accepted for digital, online, and retail transactions. In the latter scenario, he suggested merchants will appreciate a reduction in cash handling costs.<\/p>\n<p>No details were offered of how individuals or merchants would handle payments. A test conducted by China, Hong Kong, Thailand, and the UAE showed funds could move in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/09\/29\/project_inthanon_lionrock_cdbc_results\/\" rel=\"noopener\">four seconds<\/a>, rather less than the multiple days such transfers can sometimes consume, and did so at half the cost of current transfers.<\/p>\n<p>However Hong Kong\u2019s central bank, a hoped-for participant in China\u2019s CBDC, found <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/10\/05\/hkma_cbdc_technical_perspective_paper\/\" rel=\"noopener\">seven significant issues<\/a> that need to be addressed before cross-border payments could flow.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, the world already has several digital payment schemes.
