And on Thursday, as if by magic, Wormhole <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wormholecrypto\/status\/1489232008521859079?s=20\">proclaimed<\/a>, &#8220;All funds have been restored and Wormhole is back up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But the firm used the word &#8220;restored&#8221; when &#8220;replaced&#8221; would have been more accurate. The stolen funds were not recovered from the thief; rather the looted till was refilled by benefactor Jump Crypto, which last year bought Certus One, the company that developed Wormhole.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Yfx@zRL7419RqBSn9bnlOAAAAEU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44Yfx@zRL7419RqBSn9bnlOAAAAEU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JumpCryptoHQ\">@JumpCryptoHQ<\/a> believes in a multichain future and that <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wormholecrypto\">@WormholeCrypto<\/a> is essential infrastructure,&#8221; Jump Crypto said <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JumpCryptoHQ\/status\/1489301013408497666?s=20\">via Twitter<\/a>. &#8220;That\u2019s why we replaced 120k ETH to make community members whole and support Wormhole now as it continues to develop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wormhole has also offered the thieves that pilfered the digicash a $10m &#8220;white hat&#8221; reward if the funds are returned. There&#8217;s no word yet of any movement on that front.<\/p>\n<p>As one anonymous wag <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/I_am_JustThat\/status\/1489283206880894976?s=20\">put it<\/a>, &#8220;So the slot machine paid out for one lucky winner and the house covered the losses from profits made elsewhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The hack appears to have been made possible by a signature verification function in Wormhole&#8217;s Solana bridge code <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/samczsun\/status\/1489044979087515654?s=20\">that didn&#8217;t actually verify any signatures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paradigm security researcher &#8220;samczsun,&#8221; after exploring the pertinent code in a Twitter thread, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/samczsun\/status\/1489044999211823107?s=20\">summarized the attack scenario thus<\/a>: &#8220;Wormhole didn&#8217;t properly validate all input accounts, which allowed the attacker to spoof guardian signatures and mint 120,000 ETH on Solana, of which they bridged 93,750 (~$250m) back to Ethereum.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Yfx@zRL7419RqBSn9bnlOAAAAEU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Yfx@zRL7419RqBSn9bnlOAAAAEU&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Security researcher Matthew Garrett <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mjg59\/status\/1489068416044396551?s=20\">speculates<\/a>, based on the delay between <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/certusone\/wormhole\/pull\/751\/commits\/14437de2972631e73103f054ec6dbd8b0afae9c6#diff-0d27d8889edd071b86d3f3299276882d97613ad6ab3b0b6412ae4ebf3ccd6370\">the pull request with the fix<\/a> and its merger into the codebase, that the attacker spotted the code change and crafted an exploit before the repairs could be rolled out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So what it <em>looks<\/em> like is that an obfuscated security critical change was published, someone figured out what the vulnerability was, and then exited with all the money before the fix was deployed,&#8221;
