Take that headline in.<\/p>\n

The Switch, Nintendo\u2019s home console-portable hybrid system, has managed to outsell the Wii, a system that was a bonafide cultural phenomenon in the mid-2000s.<\/p>\n

This is likely the clearest sign we\u2019ve seen so far that the Switch has also evolved into a pop-culture gaming product, just like the Wii.<\/p>\n

According to the Japanese gaming giant\u2019s latest earnings report, the Switch\u2019s lifetime sales now sit at 103.54 million units compared to the Wii\u2019s 101.63 million. This also means that the Switch is now Nintendo\u2019s top-selling home console of all time, though it still lags behind the DS line at 154 million and the Game Boy at 118 million.<\/p>\n

Though many expected Nintendo to release a mid-generation update to the Switch earlier this year, given the system is approaching the five-year anniversary of its release, the fabled more powerful console has yet to materialize. Instead, the company released the Switch OLED model<\/a>, a minor update to the Switch that features an OLED display.<\/p>\n

Switch sales from last quarter break down as follows: the standard Switch sold 11.79 million, the Switch OLED model sold 3.99 million and the Switch Lite sold 3.17 million. In total, all Switch models sold 18.95 million units.<\/p>\n

In its earnings report, Nintendo states that it expects to ship 23 million Switches for the fiscal year, down from its 24 million projected in November and its earlier prediction of 25.5 million. Regarding individual 2021 game sales, Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> Brilliant Diamond<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Shining Pearl<\/em><\/a>\u00a0sold 13.97 million units, Mario Party Superstars<\/em><\/a>\u00a0sold 5.43 million units,\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD<\/em><\/a>\u00a0sold 3.85 million, and\u00a0Metroid Dread<\/em> <\/a>sold 2.74 million copies.<\/p>\n

Looking to the future, Pok\u00e9mon Legends: Arceus<\/em><\/a> just released last week and Kirby and the Forgotten Land<\/em> launches in March.<\/p>\n

Though the Switch\u2019s sales remain impressive \u2014 especially in the face of the Xbox Series X<\/a> and PlayStation 5<\/a> \u2014 it\u2019s unclear how much longer Nintendo can maintain the system\u2019s sales momentum, especially as Microsoft and Sony\u2019s respective current-generation consoles start to hit their stride.<\/p>\n
