After trending for a month straight,\u00a0Wordle<\/em> is now owned by The<\/em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em>. Needless to say, it\u2019s a big disappointment.\u00a0Wordle<\/em> will eventually become a paid game<\/a>\u00a0and lose the purity that made it so successful in the first place. But hey, we\u2019ve got good news. You can save\u00a0Wordle<\/em> for offline use and play it forever.<\/p>\n

As we\u2019ve discussed in previous articles,\u00a0Wordle<\/em> is an incredibly simple hunk of code. It runs everything client-side, meaning that no part of the game (minus your streak) taps into a server for information. Over 7,000 days worth of\u00a0Wordle<\/em> answers sit comfortably in the website\u2019s HTML, so if you save the website to your desktop, you can run it offline.<\/p>\n

Running\u00a0Wordle<\/em> offline works perfectly, minus daily streaks\u2014I expect that someone will fix this problem soon. Anyway, the offline\u00a0Wordle<\/em> will reset every day with a new word, and it will still let you share your game results on Twitter.<\/p>\n

How to Save \u2018Wordle\u2019 to Your Desktop<\/h2>\n

Saving\u00a0Wordle<\/em> to your desktop or laptop takes just a few clicks. While the process differs a bit between each browser, the following instructions should work for most people.<\/p>\n

Simply visit\u00a0Wordle<\/em> in your browser, right-click any part of the website, and select \u201csave page as a webpage.\u201d Safari users should select \u201csave page as\u201d and choose the \u201cwebarchive\u201d option.<\/p>\n

Then, choose a destination for the file. I suggest saving it to your desktop for easy access, though you can move it to any destination once it\u2019s downloaded.\u00a0When you double-click the HTML or webarchive file, it will open a saved version of\u00a0Wordle<\/em> in your browser. Again, this saved page will continue working if the regular\u00a0Wordle<\/em> website ever shuts down or gets paywalled.<\/p>\n

If these steps don\u2019t work for you, follow the official instructions for saving webpages in\u00a0Google Chrome<\/a>, Safari<\/a>,\u00a0Firefox<\/a>, or\u00a0Edge<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the event that you lose your offline copy of\u00a0Wordle<\/em>, you can always re-download it (or play old Wordle<\/em> games)\u00a0through the Wayback Machine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Most people play\u00a0Worlde<\/em> on their phone or tablet. So, does this trick work on a mobile device?<\/p>\n

The short answer is \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the good news; mobile browsers can<\/em> open\u00a0HTML and webarchive files. If you save\u00a0Wordle<\/em> on your computer and move it to your phone, then your phone\u2019s built-in filesystem should provide the option to open the webpage in Chrome or Safari. It just won\u2019t work, for some reason.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll be sure to update this article if someone finds a way to get the offline\u00a0Wordle<\/em> to work on mobile. But in the meantime, you can just enjoy the\u00a0Wordle<\/em> website like you have every morning (or night). If the New York Times<\/em> decides to hide the game behind a paywall, it won\u2019t happen for a while.<\/p>\n
