Google provides an update on the use of emojis in webpage titles and meta descriptions, saying they\u2019ll neither hurt or help SEO.<\/p>\n

This is stated by Google\u2019s Search Advocate John Mueller during the Google Search Central SEO office-hours hangout recorded on January 28.<\/p>\n

One of the submitted questions asks for an update on Google\u2019s position on emojis, specifically when it comes to using them in titles and descriptions.<\/p>\n

Websites are allowed to use emojis when optimizing pages, as they\u2019re not against any of Google\u2019s guidelines.<\/p>\n

But is it advisable to use them?<\/p>\n

Optimizing webpages with emojis seems like wasted effort, but you can decide for yourself after reading Mueller\u2019s response below.\n<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s Position On Using Emojis In Page Titles & Descriptions<\/h2>\n

Websites can use emojis anywhere they want \u2014 whether that\u2019s in titles, meta descriptions, or in the main content.<\/p>\n

However, there\u2019s no guarantee Google will show them in search results.<\/p>\n

Google rewrites a majority of titles<\/a> as it is, but even if it chooses to display the title you\u2019ve written it may disregard the emojis.<\/p>\n

Mueller says Google won\u2019t display emojis if they\u2019re disruptive or make the search snippet look misleading.<\/p>\n

Instead, Google will try to figure out the equivalent word and use that instead.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can definitely use emojis in titles and descriptions on your pages. We don\u2019t show all of these in the search results, especially if we think that it kind of disrupts the search results in terms of, it looks misleading perhaps, or those kinds of things.<\/p>\n

But you can definitely keep them there, it\u2019s not that they cause any problems. I don\u2019t think you would have any significant advantage in putting those there, because at most what we try to figure out is what is the equivalent of that emoji and maybe use that word as well, kind of associated with the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

While emojis won\u2019t cause any problems with your site\u2019s SEO, they won\u2019t do anything to help it either.<\/p>\n

Google doesn\u2019t give more weight to titles and descriptions with emojis just because they\u2019re more colorful than plain text, Mueller says:<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s not that you get an advantage for kind of like, oh you have a colourful title kind of thing. So from that point of view, if you like to have these in your titles and descriptions, go for it. If you don\u2019t want them there then that\u2019s fine too. I don\u2019t think it kind of hurts or harms SEO or helps SEO in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

With all that taken into consideration, you\u2019re probably better off writing titles and descriptions in plain text.<\/p>\n

Emojis are allowed, but it\u2019s highly unlike Google will display them.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no SEO advantage to using them, either.<\/p>\n

The only potential benefit to emojis is an improved click-through rate, so that\u2019s something you\u2019ll have to weigh out when deciding if they\u2019re worth using.<\/p>\n
