Aerial view of the tank farm in the harbor of Hamburg.\" height=\"324\" width=\"648\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text_center\">Aerial view of Oiltanking&#8217;s tank farm in the harbor of Hamburg, Germany (click to enlarge)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The company this afternoon confirmed to <em>The Register<\/em> that Oiltanking GmbH&#8217;s terminals \u2013 which provide Shell service stations, among others \u2013 are &#8220;operating with limited capacity&#8221; and that Mabanaft GmbH had &#8220;declared force majeure for the majority of its inland supply activities in Germany.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shell has additional providers, however, and said it had &#8220;diverted operations to other suppliers to minimise disruption.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mabanaft describes itself as the &#8220;leading independent importer and wholesaler of petroleum products in Germany.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Oiltanking and Mabenaft told <em>El Reg<\/em> in a statement:<\/p>\n<p>Marquard &amp; Bahls owns a portfolio that includes three divisions: the larger Oiltanking GmbH Group \u2013\u00a0which the firm told us &#8220;continues to operate all terminals in all global markets&#8221;; Skytanking; We will be keeping our customers and partners informed and provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to its <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marquard-bahls.com\/fileadmin\/content\/global_content\/downloads\/annual-reports\/Marquard-Bahls_Annual-Report-2020_EN_web.pdf\">most recent annual report<\/a> [PDF], for the year 2020 and filed in May 2021, parent firm Marquard &amp; Bahls had a &#8220;satisfactory operational year in 2020&#8221;, with revenues of \u20ac9.183bn and pre-tax earnings of \u20ac149m. &#8220;Tank storage logistics and energy trading achieved good results, while aviation fuelling suffered a massive revenue collapse due to COVID-related travel restrictions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YflfWZ253gZqyeDhoN6GBwAAAFE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D4%26raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=4&amp;c=44YflfWZ253gZqyeDhoN6GBwAAAFE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D426raptor%3Dfalcon%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>The report singled out Germany&#8217;s &#8220;service station business for commercial motor transport&#8221; \u2013 which was &#8220;initially in decline at the start of the pandemic but &#8220;gradually recovered in the second quarter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Big moves last year by M&amp;B&#8217;s flagship holding, Oiltanking, included <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oiltanking.com\/es\/publicaciones\/notas-de-prensa\/detalles\/article\/oiltanking-announces-sale-of-four-european-terminals-to-evos.html\" rel=\"noopener\">flogging off four European liquid storage terminals<\/a> to Evos in Q4 2021 for an &#8220;undisclosed&#8221; amount as well as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oiltanking.com\/en\/news-info\/press-releases\/details\/article\/oiltanking-joins-forces-with-singapore-authorities-and-industry-partners-to-enhance-digitalization-i.html\">inking a deal<\/a> with Singaporean authorities in which it became a founding &#8220;shareholder&#8221; of Singapore Trade Data Exchange (SGTraDex), a public-private partnership &#8220;aimed at reshaping the local supply chain ecosystem through digitalization.&#8221; SGTraDex was expected to launch in &#8220;early 2022.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oiltanking says on its website that it owns and operates 45 terminals in 20 countries in the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific including China and India. The company adds that it has an overall storage capacity of more than 18.5 million cubic metres.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YflfWZ253gZqyeDhoN6GBwAAAFE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_security\/front&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33YflfWZ253gZqyeDhoN6GBwAAAFE&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>As for the German companies, Oiltanking Deutschland GmbH and Mabanaft GmbH invoking &#8220;force majeure&#8221; \u2013 a contractual clause that frees the business from liabilities arising from its obligations to customers \u2013 it&#8217;s unclear what the outcome will be. They will have to demonstrate that the attack is within the scope of their contractual provisions.<\/p>\n<p>We have asked the firms which software and systems were affected.
