That\u2019s because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-vs-microsoft-bing\/400855\/\">Bing and Google<\/a> share many of the same ranking signals.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, there are <a href=\"http:\/\/bvsg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key differences<\/a> between SEO for Google and Bing \u2013 and you\u2019re going to learn about those here.\n<\/p>\n<h2>1. Keywords<\/h2>\n<p>While Bing announced in 2014 that they no longer consider meta keywords for ranking purposes, search engines like Yandex and Baidu still do.<\/p>\n<p>Google has worked to improve search accuracy by understanding searcher intent and interpreting contextual cues from different websites.<\/p>\n<p>We call this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/latent-semantic-indexing-wont-help-seo\/240705\/\">semantic search<\/a>, which in part relies on machine learning and artificial intelligence (such as RankBrain) to help them understand a page\u2019s content.<\/p>\n<p>Google has said that RankBrain is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/ranking-factors\/top-ranking-factors\/\">third most important factor<\/a> in its ranking algorithm. This means that exact match keywords don\u2019t matter nearly as much as creating comprehensive topical pages and articles for your visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Bing has been catching up when it comes to broad-matching keywords.<\/p>\n<p>Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmaster\/help\/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Webmaster Guidelines<\/a> advise you to \u201cDevelop rich content based on keyword research that shows what search users the information they are looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bing\u2019s Webmaster Guidelines are explicit about how Keywords can help you rank. Bing won\u2019t rule out the possibility <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoperniX\/status\/1266440501688848384?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of using the meta keywords tag<\/a> (which Google ignores).<\/p>\n<p>Now, this doesn\u2019t give you an excuse to abuse them or to start stuffing irrelevant keywords into the meta tag. But it does mean you shouldn\u2019t neglect them entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Bing also has a ton of <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/advertising\/guides\/code-example-keyword-planner?view=bingads-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keyword tools<\/a> to help SEO pros, and you\u2019ll find more detail than in some Google tools.<\/p>\n<p>In Bing Webmaster Tools, they have a powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/keyword-research-628070b6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keyword tool<\/a> that shows you trends and related\/suggested keywords. Use their tools to help with other search engines.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Backlinks<\/h2>\n<p>Both Google and Bing are big on trust. They both value <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/link-building-guide\/natural-link\/\">backlinks<\/a>, for example, because these are signs that visitors found your content useful, trust the information you\u2019ve provided, and now want to share it with others.<\/p>\n<p>Google gauges trust by measuring the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-pagerank-explained\/350630\/\">PageRank<\/a> (the link equity flowing through backlinks) of domains linking to your content. High-PageRank links are weighted heavily, and a few of those are worth way more than hundreds of spammy, low-PageRank links.<\/p>\n<p>Bing also values high-quality links, but they judge quality slightly differently. Backlinks aren\u2019t above all other ranking factors, for Bing. They prefer backlinks from quality sites in smaller quantities.<\/p>\n<p>Like Google, Bing also likes internal links with relevant anchor text.<\/p>\n<p>On top of this \u2013 Bing removes pages from their index if they don\u2019t have enough links, and doesn\u2019t penalize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/link-building-7a3f99b7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buying links<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThat said, buying a link on a busy website can bring you direct traffic, so it does remain a valid marketing tactic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Again, be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/webmasters-guidelines-30fba23a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">careful<\/a> with this technique, as Bing says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cManipulating inbound links to artificially inflate the number of links pointed at a website can lead to your site being delisted from Bing index.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Google:<\/strong> Authoritative backlinks and high-quality content are the most important indicators of a page\u2019s authority when it comes to backlinks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bing:<\/strong> Fewer, more authoritative backlinks are very important, as are internal links with highly relevant anchor text.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Social Signals<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/social-media-seo\/196185\/\">Google has long denied<\/a> that social signals play a special role in page ranking, despite a lot of speculation that it plays some small role.<\/p>\n<p>Bing, on the other hand, has historically been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmaster\/help\/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">very open<\/a> about the importance of social signals:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSocial media plays a role in today\u2019s effort to rank well in search results. The most obvious part it plays is via influence. If you are influential socially, this leads to your followers sharing your information widely, which in turn results in Bing seeing these positive signals. <strong>These positive signals can have an impact on how you rank organically in the long run.<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you want to rank well on Bing, then you\u2019re going to need to keep an ear to the ground in your social media circles.<\/p>\n<p>Baking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/social-media-strategies-seo\/277839\/\">social media<\/a> into your SEO strategy is time-consuming, but well worth it if you want to optimize for Bing. Consider downloading a comprehensive social media listening tool that will help you find and tap into every conversation people are having about your business on the web.<\/p>\n<p>Bing also offers an API to check out what\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/bing\/search-apis\/bing-news-search\/how-to\/trending-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trending on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Google:<\/strong> Treats Facebook and Twitter pages like any other indexed pages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bing:<\/strong> Social signals are a key ranking factor. Search results will show you your Facebook friends\u2019 and Twitter followers\u2019 ratings of different businesses.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Multimedia Content<\/h2>\n<p>Bing\u2019s been pushing the envelope when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bing.com\/search-quality-insights\/2017-09\/Object-Detection-in-Visual-Search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visual search<\/a>, which goes hand-in-hand with one of their most touted features \u2014 \u201centity understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, Bing has the ability to accurately crawl and understand various types of multimedia content, such as video, audio, and images.<\/p>\n<p>In a lot of ways, Bing is leading the pack with regards to visual search. When Flash was a thing, Bing could crawl and index Flash sites just fine.<\/p>\n<p>Use high-quality images, and optimize them to help load time.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Google still relies most heavily on text-based content. High-quality images and videos do matter, but they aren\u2019t weighted nearly as heavily as they are for Bing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Google:<\/strong> Emphasizes text-based content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bing: <\/strong>More emphasis on multimedia content.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Other Technical SEO Differences<\/h2>\n<p>While the four differences listed above are probably the biggest differences separating Google and Bing, there are still some other small discrepancies that I should note.<\/p>\n<p>For example, while you can generally rely on Google to index your website and trust that it will try to crawl and index every page of your site, Bing tends to focus on key pages and crawls your pages more infrequently.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, you can help this process along by increasing your crawl rate using your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/toolbox\/webmaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bing Webmaster Tools<\/a> and clicking <em>Crawl Control<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You can also submit your sitemap to Bing by clicking <em>Submit a Sitemap<\/em> in your Webmaster Tools or by including a path to it in your robots.txt\u2014an important step, given that this is a ranking signal.<\/p>\n<p>Another benefit to Bing is its API.
