The<\/em> New York Times<\/em> has acquired the massively popular online word puzzle game Wordle<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a press release, the company said the deal is valued at \u201can undisclosed price in the low-seven figures.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently, the game is available for free via browsers<\/a>, although The New York Times Company says it will eventually move over to\u00a0The New York Times<\/em>\u2018 website. When it does, though, it will remain free-to-play for everyone, according to the company.<\/p>\n

When American software engineer Josh Wardle first released Wordle<\/em> in October 2021, the game had only reached 90 players by November. However, 300,000 people played it nearly two months later, with millions of daily players diving in now.<\/p>\n

The game gives you six chances to guess a five-letter word using hot-or-cold-like coloured hints. One new puzzle is released every day, making it something of a fun, short daily routine for players.\u00a0Wordle\u00a0<\/em>also lets you post your results in a solution-free way to social media so you and your friends can compare.<\/p>\n

While Wordle<\/em>\u2018s new owner might initially seem surprising, Wardle says it \u201cfeels very natural,\u201d given that the \u201cNew York Times Games play a big part in [Wordle<\/em>\u2018s] origins.\u201d In addition to confirming that the game will remain free-to-play, Wardle said he\u2019s working with The New York Times Company to \u201cmake sure your wins and streaks will be preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t today\u2019s only game-related acquisition news; PlayStation also revealed plans to buy\u00a0Destiny\u00a0<\/em>developer Bungie for\u00a0$3.6 billion USD<\/a> (about $4.6 billion CAD).<\/p>\n
