Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC today <\/span>announced<\/span><\/a> plans to acquire Bungie Inc., a major videogame developer, for $3.6 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n

The transaction represents the third multibillion-dollar acquisition of a videogame company since the start of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sony Interactive Entertainment is Sony Group Corp.\u2019s videogame business. The Tokyo-based conglomerate has a presence in several market segments: it\u2019s a major maker of consumer electronics, ranks as the world\u2019s largest music publisher and has a substantial semiconductor business. Sony competes in a number of other areas as well, including healthcare and financial services.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bungie is a Bellevue, Washington-based videogame developer with more than 900 employees. The company launched in 1991 with an initial focus on making videogames for Apple Inc. computers. In 2000, Bungie was acquired by Microsoft Corp. and went on to develop a series of bestselling videogames for the technology giant\u2019s Xbox videogame console.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2007, Bungie spun off from Microsoft to once again become an independent company. It has since established itself as a major player in the videogame market with millions of users worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBungie has created and continues to evolve some of the world\u2019s most beloved videogame franchises and, by aligning its values with people\u2019s desire to share gameplay experiences, they bring together millions of people around the world,\u201d said Sony President and Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sony is one of former Bungie parent Microsoft\u2019s top competitors in the videogame market. Sony Interactive Entertainment, the business unit acquiring Bungie, sells the PlayStation 5 videogame console, which directly competes with Microsoft\u2019s Xbox product line. The PlayStation 5 runs on a system-on-chip that was developed by Sony in collaboration with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and includes a custom central processing unit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sony <\/span>stated<\/span><\/a> last year that it was expecting to sell 14.8 million PlayStation 5 units in the 12 months through March 2022. The console\u2019s popularity has <\/span>reportedly<\/span><\/a> helped Sony encourage more consumer purchases of its video games. The acquisition of Bungie is set to enhance this part of the company\u2019s business.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an important step in our strategy to expand the reach of PlayStation to a much wider audience,\u201d said Sony Interactive Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan. \u201cWe understand how vital Bungie\u2019s community is to the studio and look forward to supporting them as they remain independent and continue to grow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sony\u2019s $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie marks the third multibillion-dollar purchase of a videogame company to have been announced this month. Microsoft previously said that it plans to acquire Activision Blizzard Inc., one of the videogame market\u2019s leading players, in a <\/span>record $68.7 billion transaction<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 A few days earlier, Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. <\/span>inked a deal<\/span><\/a> to buy mobile game maker Zynga Inc. for $12.7 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n
