But this time there&#8217;s a twist: the crypto upstart has appealed for the return of its assets by appealing to the thieves&#8217; consciences.<\/p>\n<p>The crypto concern is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/qbt.fi\/app\" rel=\"noopener\">Qubit Finance<\/a> \u2013 an outfit that offers decentralized lending and borrowing and operates under the motto &#8220;Lend to ascend \u2013 Borrow for tomorrow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday Qubit <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@QubitFin\/protocol-exploit-report-305c34540fa3\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a> one of its protocols had been exploited in unintended ways, with the result that attackers made off with $80 million of crypto assets.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"condor\" data-xsm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-sm=\",fluid,mpu,\" data-md=\",fluid,mpu,\">\n        <noscript><br \/>\n            <a twofold.<\/p>\n<p>One effort aims to help victims by creating a website on which they can download records of their holdings being stolen, for presentation to police. <i>The Register<\/i> wishes those of stolen coin.<\/p>\n<p>Quick back-of-the-envelope calculation: Qubit is asking the exploiter to forgo $78 million.<\/p>\n<p>In return, the firm is offering the kudos that comes with scoring the equal highest bug bounty known to have been paid for finding flaws, and a chance for the attacker to cleanse their conscience.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" the perpetrator.<\/p>\n<p>Between the threat of security experts on their tail, and the evidence Qubit has found, <i>The Register<\/i> fancies whoever exploited the protocol may well be weighing the chance to score $2 million of clean bounty cash against the complexities of turning $80 million of marked digi-dollars into something more fungible.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" It happened after the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/08\/11\/poly_network_funds_returned\/\" rel=\"noopener\">$600 million crypto-heist at Poly Network<\/a>. But the perps in that case claimed they were pranksters, not thieves.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no indication the perpetrators in this case aren&#8217;t just thieves \u2013 a profession not noted for displaying honourable qualities.
