name Libra by Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s Facebook (itself now operating as Meta) will reportedly sell its assets to Silvergate Capital Corporation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Silvergate, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diem.com\/en-us\/updates\/diem-silvergate-partnership\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced<\/a> a partnership with the Diem Association in May 2021, is negotiating with Diem to buy its technology for something like $200m, according to reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-01-25\/zuckerberg-s-stablecoin-ambitions-unravel-with-diem-sale-talks\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bloomberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebooks-cryptocurrency-venture-to-wind-down-sell-assets-11643248799\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/facebooks-diem-collapse-amid-sale-negotiations-crypto-meta\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The deal has not yet been publicly finalized but it may be soon \u2013 a Diem spokesperson declined comment when asked to confirm the reports but said he&#8217;d be in touch immediately if the situation changes.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" for Wedbush Securities, said, &#8220;With it looking like Diem may not happen, could you talk about your distribution strategy related to the Stablecoin initiative if you were to go about it on your negotiations were still underway \u2013 but affirmed that the company still sees a business opportunity to provide Stablecoins \u2013 digital tokens tied to the US dollar \u2013 which was why the firm hooked up with Diem last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We intend to be the issuer of a US dollar-backed Stablecoin, and we would expect that the distribution for that Stablecoin would largely happen through our existing customers, as well as new potential customers that have retail distribution,&#8221; said Lane.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" data-pos=\"top\" data-raptor=\"falcon\" What started in 2019 as an effort by Facebook to invent its own blockchain-based cryptocurrency and payment system \u2013 and remake global finance and data collection in its own tarnished image \u2013 seems destined to end with the Diem Association parting out its technology. Meanwhile, Diem&#8217;s progenitor has pivoted to virtual reality to escape its reputation as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/03\/22\/facebooks_cambridge_analytica\/\">an accessory to privacy violations<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-facebook-files-11631713039\" rel=\"nofollow\">willing merchant<\/a> of misinformation and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/the-facebook-papers-language-moderation-problems-392cb2d065f81980713f37384d07e61f\" rel=\"nofollow\">hate speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Diem never really got off the ground. At launch, the project, then known as Libra, had 27 partners, with the hope of reaching 100 by 2020, and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/08\/22\/facebook_libra_cryptocurrency\/\">already dogged<\/a> by privacy concerns that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/06\/18\/facebook_libra_cryptocurrency_privacy\/\">drew<\/a> the attention of lawmakers. By October 2019, initial partners were already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2019\/10\/11\/from_libra_to_leaveya\/\">jumping ship<\/a>, prompting Libra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2020\/04\/16\/facebook_libra_relaunch\/\">to scale back its ambitions<\/a> a few months later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Libra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/12\/01\/facebook-backed-libra-digital-currency-has-been-renamed-diem.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">became Diem<\/a> in December 2020 in an effort to disassociate itself with Facebook, the least trusted social media service in the US, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/context\/nov-4-22-2021-washington-post-schar-school-tech-poll\/1f827037-688f-4030-a3e4-67464014a846\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_6\" rel=\"nofollow\">Washington Post-Schar School poll<\/a> conducted November 2021.
