In a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/inside-youtube\/letter-susan-our-2022-priorities\/\">public letter<\/a> outlining YouTube\u2019s goals for 2022, CEO\u00a0Susan\u00a0Wojcicki expressed the company\u2019s interest in helping creators \u201ccapitalize\u201d on NFTs. But it doesn\u2019t seem like the company will copy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/107953\/facebook-and-twitter-are-racing-to-make-your-profile-picture-an-nft\/\">Twitter\u2019s NFT avatars<\/a>. Instead, it may develop an NFT marketplace that lets people purchase NFTs from videos.<\/p>\n<p>Creator revenue is the focus of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/inside-youtube\/letter-susan-our-2022-priorities\/\">Susan\u00a0Wojcicki\u2019s letter<\/a>. She spends a lot of time discussing how the platform will develop alternative revenue streams in 2022, which should decrease creators\u2019 dependence (and YouTube\u2019s dependence) on advertising. Today, these alternative revenue streams include fan-focused features, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/7636690?hl=en\">Channel Memberships<\/a>, but they will be more shopping-oriented in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re investing to make YouTube the next generation of commerce,\u201d says Wojcicki. That means expanding the site\u2019s experimental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.in\/tech\/news\/youtube-is-testing-shopping-feature-on-live-streams-for-select-creators\/articleshow\/84628204.cms\">Shopping feature,<\/a> which lets creators sell products\u00a0<em>inside<\/em> of their live video streams. Here\u2019s the gist of the Shopping feature\u2014a small \u201cBuy Now\u201d box will pop up every time a live makeup tutorial mentions a product, but clicking this box won\u2019t redirect you away from the video. It\u2019s like YouTube mixed with QVC.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to see how this Shopping feature could extend to NFTs.\u00a0Wojcicki plainly states that YouTube wants to help \u201ccreators capitalize on\u00a0emerging technologies, including things like NFTs\u201d while still connecting to their fans. Unless YouTube is talking about NFT profile pictures, which is doubtful, it\u2019s probably hinting at NFTs you can purchase while watching videos or livestreams.<\/p>\n<p>\t<lite-youtube videoid=\"zkqeASjU3rc\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/zkqeASjU3rc\/hqdefault.jpg');\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"lty-playbtn\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"lyt-visually-hidden\">Play Video<\/span><br \/>\n<\/button>\n<\/lite-youtube><\/p>\n<p>The response to this announcement is pretty predictable. Those who are knee-deep in crypto are excited, but most people are upset with YouTube for showing interest in NFTs and blockchain technology.<\/p>\n<p>Criticisms tend to focus on NFT scams, which are already easy to pull off\u00a0<em>without<\/em> an integrated YouTube NFT marketplace. If people can purchase NFTs through YouTube, we will almost certainly see a glut of scam videos on the platform (which will be hard to identify now that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/102903\/youtube-hides-dislike-counts-forcing-you-to-read-the-comments\/\">YouTube hides video dislikes<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the environmental impact of blockchain is also a major criticism. Crypto companies promise that the blockchain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/85029\/why-cryptomining-is-bad-for-the-environment-and-how-it-could-get-better\/\">won\u2019t be so resource-intensive<\/a> in the future, but at the time of writing, the average NFT has a carbon footprint equivalent to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nft-art-environmental-costs\/\">a European household\u2019s monthly electric use<\/a>. And yes, that carbon footprint accumulates every time the NFT is traded. (Somewhat ironically, Susan Wojcicki\u2019s letter also discusses <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/education-and-inspiration-more-sustainable-world\/\">Google\u2019s commitment<\/a> to sustainability.)<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that NFT culture is already profitable on YouTube. There\u2019s no shortage of NFT influencers on the platform, and some of these influencers make money selling digital assets to their viewers. YouTube is basically guaranteed a profit if it enters this space.<\/p>\n<p>And that brings us to our unfortunate conclusion\u2014if YouTube opens an NFT marketplace, it won\u2019t face financial ruin when viewers\u2019 NFTs tank in value. The company will enable people to gamble their money, and it will\u00a0profit from this enablement.
