Samsung Galaxy phones have become as ubiquitous as iPhones<\/a>, and that \u201cS\u201d is pretty ubiquitous, too. Many of Samsung\u2019s Galaxy devices have an \u201cS\u201d tacked on to their names. Why is that, and what does it mean?<\/p>\n

A Brief History of \u201cGalaxy S\u201d<\/h2>\n

Samsung entered the Android world with the simply named \u201cSamsung Galaxy S\u201d in 2010. However, if you live in the U.S., you probably know this phone by a different name.<\/p>\n

U.S. carriers each got slightly different versions of the Galaxy S with unique designs and names. AT&T had the \u201cCaptivate,\u201d Sprint had the \u201cEpic 4G,\u201d T-Mobile had the \u201cVibrant,\u201d and Verizon had the \u201cFascinate.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was a strange time for Android smartphones. Carriers all wanted to have their own special version of these devices that stood out from other networks. They were basically the same phones just with different bodies and names.<\/p>\n

That trend didn\u2019t last long, though, at least for Samsung. The Galaxy S II was released next and it maintained the same name across carriers in the U.S. Samsung stuck with the roman numerals for the Galaxy S III, but finally adopted numbers with the Galaxy S4 in 2013.<\/p>\n

In 2014, the Galaxy S name expanded to tablets with the \u201cGalaxy Tab S.\u201d That\u2019s where things stand today. The Galaxy S line includes smartphones and tablets. It\u2019s one of several lines of mobile devices from Samsung, including the Galaxy Z<\/a>, Galaxy A, Galaxy J, and Galaxy M.<\/p>\n

The \u201cS\u201d Marks High-End Devices<\/h2>\n

Now we know when the Galaxy S arrived, but what does it actually mean? In general, the \u201cS\u201d is just a letter used to differentiate between the many mobile devices Samsung offers<\/a>. It\u2019s reserved for high-end smartphones and tablets.<\/p>\n

The idea is that, if you see a Galaxy device with \u201cS\u201d in its model name, you know it\u2019s going to be a premium device. However, there is still some variance in the \u201cS\u201d models. For example, the Galaxy S \u201cFE\u201d line<\/a>\u00a0consists of slightly more affordable versions of their flagship counterparts.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s really the purpose of the \u201cS.\u201d The actual letter isn\u2019t that important; it\u2019s just a differentiator to organize devices.<\/p>\n

The \u201cS\u201d Also Means \u201cSuper Smart\u201d<\/h2>\n

However, the \u201cS\u201d does have a specific meaning. Apparently, it stands for \u201cSuper Smart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Samsung explained this back in 2011<\/a>. It\u2019s a little silly, but it makes sense for devices that are supposed to be the top of the line. The company had definitions for all of its series\u2019 at one time, including \u201cW\u201d (Wonder), \u201cM\u201d (Magical), and \u201cY\u201d (Young), but it seems to have dropped that in recent years.<\/p>\n

There you have it. The \u201cS\u201d in Galaxy S stands for \u201cSuper Smart.\u201d Now you can say you don\u2019t just have a Samsung Galaxy smartphone; you have a Samsung Galaxy super<\/em> smartphone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
