Apex Legends\u00a0<\/em>developer Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that it\u2019s working on three Star Wars games.<\/p>\n

This is a bit of a surprise, as the EA-owned studio was previously only expected to be working on a sequel to its acclaimed 2019 action-adventure game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

In a press release, Respawn confirmed that one of the three games is indeed a follow-up to\u00a0Fallen Order<\/em>, although a specific title or other details weren\u2019t provided. All that the company said is that Stig Asmussen, the director of Fallen Order<\/em>, is returning to helm the series\u2019 next entry.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the other two games, also untitled, tackle the strategy and first-person shooter genres, respectively.<\/p>\n

Peter Hirschmann, who has overseen the production of such Star Wars games as Lego Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Force Unleashed<\/em>, will lead development on the first-person shooter (FPS). It\u2019s worth noting that he also has a background with the Medal of Honor <\/em>FPS series, while\u00a0Respawn\u2019s lineage in general \u2014 from modern games like\u00a0Titanfall <\/em>and Apex Legends<\/em> to the original Modern Warfare <\/em>series \u2014 is also in FPS.<\/p>\n

The strategy game, on the other hand, is being primarily developed by Bit Reactor, a Maryland-based studio formed by various\u00a0XCOM <\/em>and Civilization <\/em>veterans, although Respawn will provide assistance.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s likely that the strategy and FPS titles are quite a ways off. On Twitter, Respawn said its team has \u201cbegun production\u201d on the FPS<\/a>, while the formation of Bit Reactor was only officially announced last week<\/a>. However, the new\u00a0Jedi\u00a0<\/em>game might be fairly close. VentureBeat <\/em>reporter Jeff Grubb, a credible insider source in the gaming industry, said earlier this month<\/a> that he expects fans will hear about the second Star Wars Jedi\u00a0<\/em>game \u201cin a significant way\u201d before June. He added that there\u2019s a \u201cchance\u201d it could release this year, but it may also slip into 2023.<\/p>\n

These three titles help extend EA\u2019s time with the Star Wars brand. Since 2013, the publisher has had the exclusive rights to publish Star Wars games<\/a>, but these are expiring in 2023. With that, Lucasfilm has already been partnering with other companies on Star Wars games, including an open-world title from Ubisoft<\/a>, a remake of\u00a0Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic\u00a0<\/em>from Aspyr<\/a> and, controversially<\/a>,\u00a0Star Wars Eclipse\u00a0<\/em>from Quantic Dream.<\/a><\/p>\n
