Also in Japan, a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/03\/29\/renesas_fire_damage\/\" rel=\"noopener\">fire took out one of Renesas&#8217; fabs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other production lines were shut by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/07\/15\/vietnam_electronics_factory_closures_covid\/\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID outbreaks<\/a>, including an Intel chip assembly and test plant in Vietnam last July. The Japanese company was rocked by a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/06\/25\/toshiba_chairman_ousted\/\" rel=\"noopener\">scandal<\/a> that alleged the execs had pressured shareholders to vote in a way that would that would minimise the influence of activist foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p>A company plan to split into <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/11\/15\/toshiba_split\/\" rel=\"noopener\">three companies<\/a> so that it could better govern itself in response to the scandal was met with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/11\/29\/3d_investments_opposes_toshiba_split\/\" rel=\"noopener\">scathing criticism<\/a> from its second largest shareholder.
