According to a patent that has recently surfaced online, Team Blue could use \u201cstacked forksheet\u201d transistors to keep Moore\u2019s Law alive. <\/p>\n<p>By now it\u2019s no secret that Intel has been on a cultural transformation train under its new CEO Pat Gelsinger. The Team Blue boss is an outspoken and overly optimistic leader, and this has restored some investor confidence over the past year. With the successful launch of the company\u2019s first Alder Lake CPUs, Gelsinger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techspot.com\/news\/93026-intel-boss-gelsinger-amd-rearview-mirror-following-alder.html\">believes<\/a> AMD\u2019s Ryzen-powered conquest of the enthusiast desktop market may be coming to an end.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the hype, Intel needs time to recover its chipmaking crown which could take years. Over the past several months, the company has revealed several new process and packaging technologies that are in the pipeline, including new 3D transistors, Foveros logic-to-logic integration, and Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB).<\/p>\n<p class=\"img-white full\"><picture style=\"padding-bottom: calc(100% * 2748 \/ 3496)\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-10-j_1100.webp 1100w, https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-10-j.webp 3496w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 900px) 1100px, 100vw\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"2748\" width=\"3496\" src=\"https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"b-lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/p>\n<p>However, the most interesting aspect of Intel\u2019s aspirations to become a process leader can be found through its latest patents. One of these describes what Intel calls a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepatentsonline.com\/20210407999.pdf\">stacked forksheet transistor<\/a>,\u201d which is key to keeping Moore\u2019s Law alive at sub-3nm process nodes.<\/p>\n<p>The patent itself doesn\u2019t include any claims of Power-Performance-Area (PPA) improvements, but it does reveal how Intel envisions a vertically-stacked CMOS architecture that could enable higher transistor densities in future designs. This would come at a great cost in terms of manufacturing complexity, and Intel says further scaling down transistors requires a trade-off between the smallest size of a feature patterned in a semiconductor stack and the spacing between these features.<\/p>\n<p><picture style=\"padding-bottom: calc(100% * 1860 \/ 2480)\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-11-j_1100.webp 1100w, https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-11-j.webp 2480w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 900px) 1100px, 100vw\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1860\" width=\"2480\" src=\"https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"b-lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/p>\n<p>Intel is exploring the idea of using \u201cnanoribbon\u201d transistors that can be stacked on top of each other using a thin film of germanium that serves as a dielectric separation layer. This would allow the company to pack PMOS and NMOS transistors much closer together without affecting their operation. At the very least, this should lead to the reduction of the footprint of a simple CMOS device by half, so essentially a doubling of the density of future integrated circuits.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/news\/intel-may-bet-on-stacked-forksheet-transistor-tech-for-sub-2nm-chips\">noted<\/a> by Tom\u2019s Hardware, a Belgium-based research group called Imec has also explored a similar concept dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9265073\">complementary FET<\/a> (CFET) and performed simulations on a 2nm process node. The results showed a 10 percent speed increase or a 24 percent improvement in energy efficiency over traditional nanosheet designs, coupled with a 20 percent reduction in cell area. Furthermore, this could reduce the footprint of a CPU\u2019s cache \u2014 which usually takes up a huge chunk of die area \u2014 by an even more impressive 30 percent.<\/p>\n<p><picture style=\"padding-bottom: calc(100% * 863 \/ 1800)\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-13-j_1100.webp 1100w, https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-13-j.webp 1800w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 900px) 1100px, 100vw\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"863\" width=\"1800\" src=\"https:\/\/static.techspot.com\/images2\/news\/bigimage\/2022\/01\/2022-01-24-image-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"b-lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/p>\n<p class=\"tsadinc\">This research was conducted in 2019, and the components built by Imec weren\u2019t entirely built out of nanosheet\/nanoribbon transistors. Instead, they were made of a bottom FinFET layer with a single nanosheet on top, so it\u2019s entirely possible that Intel\u2019s version could achieve better results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tsadinc\">For reference, TSMC claims its upcoming 3nm process node will offer a 10 to 15 percent improvement in performance or up to a 30 percent increase in energy efficiency when compared to its 5nm process node.
