It inspired a generation of programmers and drew the ire of computer lab instructors everywhere. Here\u2019s how it came to be\u2014and how to play it today.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">The Simple Magic of <em>Gorillas<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s 1992, and you\u2019re sitting in your school\u2019s computer lab. In between assignments, you whisper to your friend, \u201cCheck this out.\u201d In the C:\\DOS directory, you run QBASIC.EXE, then load up GORILLA.BAS. It was distributed with hundreds of millions, if not billions, of PCs in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gorillas<\/em> builds off a long, proud lineage of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artillery_game\">artillery games<\/a> on computers and game consoles. To play, you enter two variables: the angle of your banana and the power. People who have played <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scorched_Earth_(video_game)\"><em>Scorched Earth<\/em><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Worms_(series)\"><em>Worms<\/em><\/a> will immediately be familiar with the basic mechanics of the <em>Gorillas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>With charming graphics (including CGA and EGA support), amusing sound effects, and simple two-player gameplay, Gorillas crammed a lot of timeless gameplay into just 1,134 lines of code. Until now, no one has ever explored how this legendary game came about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/188980\/pcs-before-windows-what-using-ms-dos-was-actually-like\/\"><strong><em>PCs Before Windows: What Using MS-DOS Was Actually Like<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">Tucking New Games into MS-DOS<\/h2>\n<p>MS-DOS, the command-line operating system, debuted as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/746568\/40-years-later-what-was-it-like-to-use-an-ibm-pc-in-1981\/\">PC-DOS with IBM PC in 1981<\/a>. Up until the release of MS-DOS 5.0, Microsoft had never marketed its DOS operating system as a standalone showcase retail product. \u201cBasically, the MS-DOS team previously had only shipped to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Original_equipment_manufacturer\">OEMs<\/a> and never retail,\u201d recalls Brad Silverberg, then the Microsoft VP in charge of MS-DOS 5.0.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft needed to spice things up because selling retail copies of MS-DOS individually wasn\u2019t as much of a sure bet as selling to OEMs. \u201cWe had to build a compelling product and a compelling selling proposition,\u201d Silverberg says. \u201cIt was a total change in the way both the product team and marketing team had to think. It had to be something people wanted to buy, rather than some software they didn\u2019t have much choice about that was included with their new computer.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-780162\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/msdos5_upgrade_box2.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Microsoft<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With this in mind, Microsoft began adding notable features to MS-DOS 5.0 before launch, including an undelete utility, a graphic shell (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DOS_Shell\">DOS Shell<\/a>), a full-screen text editor (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MS-DOS_Editor\">MS-DOS Editor<\/a>), and a new BASIC interpreter called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/QBasic\">QBasic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>QBasic\u2019s syntax differed dramatically compared to its predecessor, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GW-BASIC\">GW-BASIC<\/a>, so Microsoft decided to <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=u7oN-5y7nGsC&amp;lpg=PA514&amp;ots=j7m5ZQPsuY&amp;dq=Qbasic%20example%20programs%20MS-DOS%205.0%20money%20manager&amp;pg=PA514#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">include four example programs<\/a> to help new programmers get started with the language. These programs came with file names such as MONEY.BAS (a personal finance manager), REMLINE.BAS (removes line numbers in a program), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nibbles_(video_game)\">NIBBLES.BAS<\/a> (a snake game), and of course, GORILLA.BAS.<\/p>\n<p>According to Richard Moe, one of the creators of <em>Gorillas<\/em>, Microsoft handed off existing BASIC source code\u2014pulled from sources outside the company\u2014for an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artillery_game\">artillery game<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snake_(video_game_genre)\">snake game<\/a> to a group of computer science university students from their \u201cco-op\u201d intern program. Their goal was to rewrite the code into new games that Microsoft could legally publish with MS-DOS.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Raddatz, who programmed <em>Nibbles<\/em>, recalls the games\u2019 origins somewhat differently: \u201c<em>Nibbles<\/em> was a game I wrote myself for the TRS-80 in 1981 based on a game called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/hustle_\"><em>Hustle<\/em><\/a>. 7 years later, they ask if anyone has any ideas for BASIC games, I proposed it, and they said yes.\u201d Referring to <em>Gorillas<\/em> and <em>Nibbles<\/em>, Raddatz recalls, \u201cWe were the two winning ideas in the team-wide call for ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-780484 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/qbasic_snake.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"490\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Nibbles<\/em>, the other QBasic game that shipped with MS-DOS 5.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Three co-op employees volunteered to convert the artillery game that became <em>Gorillas<\/em>: Moe, Lance Delarme, and Lyle Hazle. According to Moe, he created the design, wrote the music and sound effects, made the art (including the gorillas themselves), and some display logic. Delarme programmed the core mechanics of the game, and Hazle focused on the cityscape generation code.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the origins of the gorilla theme, Moe mentioned needing to distance Microsoft from artillery tank battles for legal reasons: \u201cI remember specifically brainstorming silly ideas. One idea was clowns throwing pies, but what are clowns doing on buildings? King Kong on the other hand\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trio of developers worked on <em>Gorillas<\/em> as a side project in addition to their regular duties at Microsoft for a few months during 1990. The game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerhope.com\/history\/dos.htm\">launched with MS-DOS 5.0<\/a> in June of 1991. DOS 5 was a huge success for Microsoft, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iVAEAAAAMBAJ&amp;lpg=PA61&amp;ots=IXoAXORskR&amp;dq=%22MS-DOS%205.0%22%20review&amp;pg=PA61#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">good reviews<\/a>, which ensured that <em>Gorillas<\/em> spread quickly around the world. \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">We succeeded way beyond our expectations,\u201d recalls Silverberg of MS-DOS 5\u2019s success, \u201cand it gave us momentum for Windows 3.1 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/685668\/windows-95-turns-25-heres-how-it-transformed-pcs\/\">Windows 95<\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/685668\/windows-95-turns-25-heres-how-it-transformed-pcs\/\"><strong><em>Windows 95 Turns 25: When Windows Went Mainstream<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">The Legacy of Gorillas<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most compelling features of <em>Gorillas<\/em> is that its source code was fully visible and editable, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gaming\/comments\/dnzbp\/one_of_the_first_games_i_ever_played_called\/\">invited experimentation<\/a>, especially for kids at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Want to change the speed of the game? Set the variable \u201cSPEEDCONST\u201d to a higher value. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ncykt-YJO1M\">YouTube comment<\/a> by Allen Puckett recalls, \u201cI remember in high school back when we were learning DOS and Windows 3.1 all the kids thought this was some kind of hack, and the teacher wasn\u2019t even aware of it and thought we hacked the computer or brought it in, then everyone started playing it, and it got so bad that you would get suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remember similar scenes in my school computer labs as well, with kids passing around how to launch Gorillas as if it were a deep secret, usually to the instructor\u2019s surprise.<\/p>\n<p>After its release with MS-DOS in 1991, <em>Gorillas<\/em> shipped with every version of MS-DOS and Windows until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/676095\/remembering-windows-2000-microsofts-forgotten-masterpiece\/\">Windows 2000<\/a>. Raddatz recalls how the QBasic games met their end: \u201cIt was only when I gave the NT team a new version of <em>Nibbles<\/em> that accounted for increased hardware speed that they said, \u2018Wait, that\u2019s still in there?\u2019 And then they pulled the games out!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Moe, <em>Gorillas<\/em> definitely had an impact on his life trajectory. And then I went on to create other \u2018impactful\u2019 games (in some circles) like the <em>Pajama Sam<\/em> series and <em>Backyard Sports<\/em> franchises with Humongous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the years, I\u2019ve shared my <em>Gorillas<\/em> story to people of a certain age and I get a lot of stories about how it kindled their love of coding! Pretty cool,\u201d says Moe, who now works at Apple. \u201cFor me, twenty-one years in the games industry then on to other roles in tech at Amazon and now Apple, thanks to that game.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\">How to Play Gorillas Today<\/h2>\n<p>Today, the easiest way to play an authentic game of <em>Gorillas<\/em> comes courtesy of the Internet Archive, which lets you <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/GorillasQbasic\">run the original GORILLA.BAS file<\/a> in an MS-DOS emulator in your favorite modern web browser. (You can <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/NibblesQbasic\">play Nibbles<\/a> in a similar way, too.)<\/p>\n<p>When you load the page, press the \u201cpower button\u201d in the middle of the box on the screen to start the virtual computer. It will load QBasic from MS-DOS, and you\u2019ll see the code for Gorillas in a blue box on your screen. Then press \u201cP\u201d to start the game.<\/p>\n<p>People have also re-made Gorillas in other programming languages, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/inventwithpython.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/25\/gorillaspy-a-remake-of-gorillasbas\/\">Python<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackingwithswift.com\/read\/29\/overview\">Swift<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.askforgametask.com\/html5\/games\/gorillas\/\">JavaScript<\/a>, among others. Not bad to a modest example program released almost 31 years ago.
