The bottom line is that it&#8217;s running low on natural gas supplies, and prices of gas and electricity in the bloc have soared. Toward the end of last year, Russia&#8217;s state-owned Gazprom <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/europes-gas-crisis-could-lng-help-boost-energy-security\/a-60490682\">reduced<\/a> its natural gas deliveries to Europe, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-22\/russia-sends-less-gas-to-eu-as-buyers-hit-supply-limits-early\">said<\/a> this was in line with the long-term contracts it had with buyers in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow could increase its fuel export, but hasn&#8217;t \u2013 partly because Europe doesn&#8217;t want to pay through the nose for the extra last-minute gas, leaving it to rely on gas stores \u2013 and over winter, EU nations&#8217; gas storage facilities were said to be about half full. The Kremlin could try to use its position in the energy market to bend European nations to its will, or punish them, in the lead up to or during any conflict.
