Apple has long offered a discount for students and people who work in education<\/a>, but the company did a terrible job of actually making sure you were involved in education to get it<\/a>. Those days are gone, as Apple is now using\u00a0Unidays for verification in the US.<\/p>\n

Unidays is a third-party verification service that\u2019ll verify that you\u2019re actually involved in education, whether it\u2019s as a student or an educator. If you\u2019re just a regular buyer who freely clicked on the education discount to save some money on Apple hardware, you won\u2019t be able to snag those deals anymore, as noticed by Reddit users<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Outside of verifying your education status, Apple also limits the amount of hardware one person can buy in a year. Now, you can get a discount on one desktop computer, one Mac mini, one laptop, two iPads, and two accessories per year. For most people, that\u2019s far more than they\u2019ll buy in a year (or maybe even ten years), but if you\u2019re trying to equip a classroom with Apple products, that\u2019s not enough.<\/p>\n

It would be interesting to know precisely how much money Apple lost to people using the education discount without actually qualifying. It makes sense for the company to crack down on people using it who aren\u2019t supposed to, as the company stands to make some extra money from those shoppers paying the full price.<\/p>\n

Apple already had a verification process in place in the UK and some other countries, so this only changes the buying process for Apple fans<\/a> in the United States.<\/p>\n
