Voice assistants are all the rage, but did you know Spotify has one too? That\u2019s right, the Spotify app for iPhone, iPad, and Android has a voice assistant built-in and it\u2019s surprisingly cool. We\u2019ll tell you all about it.<\/p>\n

Spotify\u2019s voice assistant is called\u2014unsurprisingly\u2014\u201cHey Spotify.\u201d\u00a0It can be accessed with the \u201cHey Spotify\u201d voice command while the Spotify app is open or with a couple of shortcuts. Let\u2019s take a look at what it can do and why you might want to use it.<\/p>\n

What Can It Do?<\/h2>\n

First and foremost, \u201cHey Spotify\u201d is simply a way to do basic Spotify searches with your voice. So you can say things like \u201cPlay my \u2018Running\u2019 playlist\u201d or \u201cPlay Glass Animals\u201d and it will start playing whatever you chose. You won\u2019t have to navigate through any screens to get there. This works for playlists, artists, albums, and songs.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, the more interesting feature is custom mood playlists. For example, you can say something like \u201cPlay an upbeat playlist\u201d and Spotify will create a custom playlist based on your listening habits to fit that mood. This doesn\u2019t work for every mood; it\u2019s sort of a \u201ctrial and error\u201d thing.<\/p>\n

\"Custom<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a big fan of creating your own personalized playlists<\/a>, and this feature makes it very easy to do. You can keep the playlist as it is or use it as a jumping-off point to create your own. These custom playlists even have their own unique cover art<\/a>, taking another thing off of your plate.<\/p>\n

After Spotify creates one of these playlists, you can \u201cLike\u201d them to add them to your Library.\u00a0You can download them for offline listening<\/a> just like any other playlist, too. It\u2019s a really neat feature that not many people know about.<\/p>\n

How to Use \u201cHey Spotify\u201d<\/h2>\n

As mentioned, there are two ways to use the Spotify voice assistant\u2014with voice commands or in-app shortcuts. We\u2019ll start with the \u201cHey Spotify\u201d voice command.<\/p>\n

To enable the \u201cHey Spotify,\u201d open the Spotify app on your\u00a0iPhone<\/a>,\u00a0iPad<\/a>, or\u00a0Android<\/a> device and tap and hold the \u201cSearch\u201d tab.<\/p>\n

This will bring up a screen that asks if you want to allow the app to listen for the \u201cHey Spotify\u201d command. Tap the \u201cTurn on \u2018Hey Spotify’\u201d button to proceed.<\/p>\n

Next, you\u2019ll need to give the app permission to use your microphone. Follow the prompts to allow microphone access and audio recording.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s it for setting up the voice command. You can say \u201cHey Spotify\u201d any time the app is open in the foreground. If you don\u2019t want to use the wake-up command, there are two shortcuts to know.<\/p>\n

The first one is the aforementioned tapping and holding the \u201cSearch\u201d tab. The second is the microphone icon on the \u201cSearch\u201d page.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s all there is to the Spotify voice assistant. It\u2019s obviously not as feature-packed as Alexa or Google Assistant, but that\u2019s not the point. You can use it to make your Spotify experience a little easier, plus get some personalized playlists without much effort<\/a>.<\/p>\n
