In what can only be described as an industry-changing purchase, Microsoft has agreed to buy Activision Blizzard for a staggering sum<\/a>. For its part, Sony thinks Microsoft will keep Activation Blizzard as multiplatform releases, at least until the contracts expire.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect that Microsoft will abide by contractual agreements and continue to ensure Activision games are multiplatform,\u201d\u00a0a Sony representative told The Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0after the sale was announced.<\/p>\n

Where Sony\u2019s statement becomes interesting is the mention of \u201ccontractual agreements.\u201d Does that mean Sony expects Microsoft to hold Activision Blizzard properties to itself when these existing agreements expire? It makes sense that Microsoft would want to avoid legal action by not fulfilling the current deals, but could we see a world where games like Call of Duty<\/em> and Diablo<\/em> are only available on Microsoft platforms<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Xbox Chief Phil Spencer seemed to imply that this wouldn\u2019t be the case in his blog post<\/a> immediately following the sale announcement. He said, \u201cActivision Blizzard games are enjoyed on a variety of platforms, and we plan to continue to support those communities moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

That certainly sounds like Microsoft intends to keep releasing the company\u2019s games across all platforms, but we\u2019ll have to wait until the sale is finalized and these contractual agreements expire to know for sure.<\/p>\n
