It lets people download and upload data much more quickly, and allows more devices to access the mobile internet at the same time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">To do this, it relies on greater use of radio signals. In the US, the radio frequencies being used for 5G are in part of the spectrum known as C-Band. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">These frequencies are close to the ones used by radio altimeters on aeroplanes, which measure the height of the aircraft above the ground, and also provide data for safety and navigation systems. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The concern is that interference from 5G transmissions could stop these instruments from working properly, and cause safety problems, particularly when aircraft are coming in to land.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"subheadline-10\" class=\"ssrcss-1gsdda0-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">How serious is the risk to planes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">It is potentially very serious. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">In late 2020, the RTCA &#8211; a US organisation which produces technical guidance on aviation issues &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/SC-239-5G-Interference-Assessment-Report_274-20-PMC-2073_accepted_changes.pdf\" class=\"ssrcss-9nsdc6-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\">published a report<\/a> warning of the possibility of &#8220;catastrophic failures leading to multiple fatalities, in the absence of appropriate mitigations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">More recently, the US aviation regulator, the FAA, warned that 5G interference could lead to problems with a number of different systems aboard Boeing&#8217;s 787 Dreamliner. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">These could make it difficult to slow the plane down on landing, causing it to veer off the runway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"ssrcss-18mjolk-ComponentWrapper e1xue1i89\">\n<figure class=\"ssrcss-wpgbih-StyledFigure e34k3c23\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-ab5fd8-StyledFigureContainer e34k3c21\"><span class=\"ssrcss-1ofm9a6-Placeholder e16icw910\"><span><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Graphic showing how 5G signal could interfere with aviation\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/240\/cpsprodpb\/13745\/production\/_122858697_5g_altimeter-nc-2x-nc.png 240w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/13745\/production\/_122858697_5g_altimeter-nc-2x-nc.png 320w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/13745\/production\/_122858697_5g_altimeter-nc-2x-nc.png 480w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/13745\/production\/_122858697_5g_altimeter-nc-2x-nc.png 624w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/800\/cpsprodpb\/13745\/production\/_122858697_5g_altimeter-nc-2x-nc.png 800w, https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/976\/cpsprodpb\/13745\/production\/_122858697_5g_altimeter-nc-2x-nc.png 976w\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/cpsprodpb\/13745\/production\/_122858697_5g_altimeter-nc-2x-nc.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1363.2\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"ssrcss-1drmwog-Image ee0ct7c0\"\/><\/noscript><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"subheadline-17\" class=\"ssrcss-1gsdda0-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">How will flying be kept safe?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Planes won&#8217;t be allowed to use radio altimeters in circumstances where there could be a risk of serious interference. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">But that will restrict the ability of some aircraft to land, for example, in poor visibility. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Airlines for America, which represents ten major carriers, has warned that this could lead to more than 1,000 flights being delayed or cancelled in bad weather and mean at times &#8220;the vast majority of the travelling and shipping public will essentially be grounded&#8221;. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">It has also suggested a large part of the US aircraft fleet will be &#8220;deemed unusable&#8221; That&#8217;s because the way in which 5G is being rolled out varies from country to country. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">In the EU, for example, networks operate at lower frequencies than those which US providers are planning to use &#8211; reducing the risk of interference. 5G masts can also operate at lower power. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Nevertheless, some countries have taken further steps to reduce possible risks. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">In France, there are so-called &#8220;buffer zones&#8221; around airports where 5G signals are restricted, while antennas have to be tilted downwards to prevent potential interference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"subheadline-28\" class=\"ssrcss-1gsdda0-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">What else are the US authorities doing in response?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Regulators in the US have already taken a number of steps. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The FAA has established temporary buffer zones around 50 airports, where 5G providers will limit their activities. But these are much smaller than the zones already being used in France, and US transmitters will operate at significantly higher power levels. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">It has also begun identifying which altimeters can be used safely in areas where 5G has been deployed &#8211; and those which are not reliable enough and will need to be replaced. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">It has also identified airports where GPS systems can be used to guide approaching aircraft rather than radio altimeters. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">But the airlines insist this isn&#8217;t enough: they claim the 5G network should not be activated at all within two miles of affected airports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"subheadline-34\" class=\"ssrcss-1gsdda0-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\"><span role=\"text\">What have the 5G firms now said?<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Verizon and AT&amp;T have agreed to &#8220;temporarily&#8221; delay the rollout of 5G at what AT&amp;T said was a &#8220;limited number of towers around certain airport runways&#8221;. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Some 5G masts won&#8217;t be switched on while talks continue to find a permanent solution. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i85\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-17j9f6r-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">This should reduce the possibility of interference with onboard systems.
