Image: Search Engine Roundtable.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>However, if this is not the case (e.g., the main web results appear above the Top Stories section), Google will not deduplicate the link (as shown above, to the right). \u201cAnd again, it\u2019s something we\u2019re reviewing,\u201d Sullivan noted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Google said.<\/strong> \u201cJust to cap off with the further clarification I promised, we deduplicate a link from web results if a link appears as the first link in Top Stories and if the Top Stories box appears before web results,\u201d Sullivan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dannysullivan\/status\/1483847747270676482\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> on Twitter, \u201cIf it comes after, we don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This explanation was provided after Dieter Bohn, executive editor at <em>The Verge<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/backlon\/status\/1483243985623601152\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called out Google<\/a> over search listings that were \u201cstealing [<em>The Verge<\/em>\u2019s] content.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fit-embeded\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hey Google, I just searched for a headline that was published on my website and the ENTIRE FIRST PAGE after the news box was of websites stealing our content. The Verge didn\u2019t show up until page 2.<\/p>\n<p>This problem is getting worse. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ox2AMYOt2Q\">pic.twitter.com\/Ox2AMYOt2Q<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dieter Bohn (@backlon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/backlon\/status\/1483243985623601152?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 18, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>The query can influence deduplication.<\/strong>\u00a0 As Sullivan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dannysullivan\/status\/148326603764708352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>, searching by exact headline may not reflect how most people seek out information. Bohn\u2019s example query, \u201ctrials and tribulations turning a real camera,\u201d was a partial match for <em>The Verge<\/em>\u2019s article \u2014 Sullivan\u2019s example of what a typical user might search for was \u201cturning camera into webcam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For users searching for solutions, \u201cOur systems also are going to generally seek to show the most helpful, reliable info they can,\u201d Sullivan <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dannysullivan\/status\/1483514947225014274\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>, \u201cThat\u2019s why you don\u2019t see a lot of duplicates of your article showing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, headline-oriented searches (like the one Bohn searched for) \u201ctypically contain a lot of terms, so our systems shift to return pages that have those terms,\u201d he added. \u201cThis means authors are more likely to find duplicates, even though for typical searches that readers would do, these are unlikely to appear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deduplication isn\u2019t new.<\/strong> In January 2020, Google began efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/googles-right-sidebar-featured-snippets-are-no-more-331133\">deduplicate the right-sidebar featured snippet variant<\/a>, migrating it into the main results column. Prior to that change, the URL for featured snippets would display twice on the first results page: once as part of the featured snippet and another time as a regular organic listing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> Knowing how Google deduplicates results can help you understand how many times your content can appear on the main results page.
