InfluxData Inc. is the developer of InfluxDB, an open-source platform designed to retrieve and store time series data for monitoring, analysis, metrics and more.<\/p>\n

Recently, the company announced the new open-source engine called IOx, a refresh of the whole database that turns it into a \u201csuper powerful real-time analytics platform,\u201d according to\u00a0Evan Kaplan<\/a> (pictured), chief executive officer of InfluxData.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea is that if you\u2019re going to build any sophisticated system,\u00a0it starts with instrumentation,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the journey is defined by instrumentation.\u00a0We view ourselves as that instrumentation tooling for understanding complex systems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kaplan spoke with theCUBE industry analysts\u00a0Lisa Martin<\/a> and Dave Vellante<\/a> at the recent\u00a0AWS re:Invent<\/a>\u00a0conference, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed IOx and its new update, how InfluxData supports the developer community, what\u2019s on the horizon for InfluxData and more. (* Disclosure below.)<\/em><\/p>\n

A smarter world<\/h3>\n

The refresh of IOx added SQL capability and infinite cardinality while also handling bigger data sets. Additionally, it offers faster data retrieval, the most important aspect of the update, according to Kaplan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe now support products like Tableau and Microsoft BI, so you\u2019re taking that same data that\u00a0was available for instrumentation and now you\u2019re using it for business intelligence also,\u201d he said. \u201cThe more measurements you want over more series,\u00a0you get an expanding exponential set that can choke a database off. We\u2019ve designed IOx to handle what we call infinite cardinality, where you don\u2019t even have to\u00a0think about that design point of view.\u201d<\/p>\n

IOx is currently a very popular product in the open-source world, already having its first set of users, Kaplan pointed out. The broad SQL environment also enables the same people who code against other data warehouses to code against Influx and open up the BI market.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe journey is clear: You instrument the system, you let it run, you watch for anomalies,\u00a0you correct those anomalies and you re-instrument the system,\u201d Kaplan stated. \u201cYou do that 4 billion times,\u00a0you have a self-driving car; you do that 55 times, you have a better podcast that is handling its audio better. Everything is on that journey of getting smarter\u00a0and smarter.\u201d<\/p>\n
