“SOS Only” means you’re outside the normal operating range for your cell phone provider, so to fix it you need to move back into your carrier’s coverage area. If SOS is still there, try toggling airplane mode on and off or restarting your iPhone.<\/p>\n

What Does \u201cSOS Only\u201d Mean on iPhone?<\/h2>\n

The \u201cSOS Only\u201d or just \u201cSOS\u201d warning appears in the carrier field, at the top of the screen on your iPhone. This means that the only calls you can make on your iPhone are emergency calls to numbers like 911 (US), 112 (Europe), 999 (UK), or 000 (Australia).<\/p>\n

Normal calls to standard numbers won\u2019t work and you won\u2019t be able to send text messages. Data services that connect to the internet also won\u2019t work. Your phone is effectively limited to calling police, fire, ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue, or similar emergency services you may have in whatever country you are in.<\/p>\n

If you have an iPhone with Crash Detection or an Apple Watch with Fall Detection or other emergency services, these will still work as normal while you see the \u201cSOS Only\u201d warning.<\/p>\n

Why Does My Phone Say \u201cSOS Only\u201d?<\/h2>\n

\u201cSOS Only\u201d means that the carrier your iPhone normally uses is out of range but that you\u2019re in range of a rival network. For example, if you subscribe to AT&T but you\u2019re in an area that\u2019s only covered by Verizon, you\u2019ll see the SOS Only warning on your iPhone.<\/p>\n

This means you can still call for help if you find yourself in trouble but outside of normal cell phone range. \u201cSOS Only\u201d will appear when you\u2019re traveling abroad depending on which country you are calling from.<\/p>\n

Since \u201cSOS Only\u201d is more of a failsafe feature than a problem, the only \u201cfix\u201d is to move within range of your carrier\u2019s network. If you see the message appear a lot, you might want to consider making use of your iPhone\u2019s dual-SIM capabilities<\/a>\u00a0and subscribing to another mobile plan.<\/p>\n

Sometimes your iPhone can get \u201cstuck\u201d on the \u201cSOS Only\u201d warning, causing it to appear in areas where you normally get a signal. In this instance, you can try enabling Airplane Mode by swiping down from the top-right corner and toggling the plane symbol on and then off in Control Center.<\/p>\n
