An ongoing theme at the re:Invent conference was the increasing volume of public sector investment in the public cloud.<\/p>\n

Agencies all over the U.S. now see the cloud\u2019s benefits in areas like innovation, service delivery, research and data protection; and North Carolina\u2019s Department of Health and Human Services adds to that growing list.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe started off with our first module<\/span>\u00a0within our Medicaid expansion, a<\/span>nd that was the first time that we went into the cloud,\u201d said Charles Carter<\/a>\u00a0(pictured), assistant secretary for technology services at the state of North Carolina\u2019s DHHS. \u201c<\/span>We worked with AWS to do our Encounter Processing System,<\/span>\u00a0and it was an incredible success.<\/span>\u00a0I think the ease of use was something<\/span>\u00a0that people weren\u2019t quite ready for, b<\/span>ut it was really exciting to see that in addition to<\/span>\u00a0the scalability benefits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Carter spoke with theCUBE industry analyst\u00a0John Walls<\/a> at the recent\u00a0<\/span>AWS Executive Summit at re:Invent<\/span><\/a>, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed the challenges and progress encountered with the Agency\u2019s cloud migration. <\/span>(* Disclosure below.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Setting things up for the long term<\/h3>\n

The DHHS\u2019 cloud migration journey is a multiyear effort, with\u00a060% of the organization\u2019s<\/a> business to be transitioned to the cloud by 2025. And while the majority of that cloud transformation has been supported by AWS to date, it plans to stand up and support a multicloud infrastructure in the future.<\/p>\n

The pandemic served as an accelerant for the DHHS\u2019 cloud migration. It simply couldn\u2019t execute certain projects without leaning on the cloud, according to Carter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe knew that in order to do what we needed to do, it couldn\u2019t happen<\/span>\u00a0on-premises,\u201d he explained.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cIt wasn\u2019t an option.<\/span>\u00a0So if we wanted to build these capabilities,<\/span>\u00a0if we wanted to bring in technologies<\/span>\u00a0that really brought data to our key officials<\/span>\u00a0to make good decisions<\/span>\u00a0on behalf of our residents in North Carolina,<\/span>\u00a0then we were going to have to build things quickly.<\/span>\u00a0And the only way you can do that is in the cloud.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
