As an important partner of Amazon Web Services Inc., Dell Technologies Inc. helps organizations make the most of their AWS investment through data protection and management. Dell\u2019s most recent announcement<\/a>\u00a0is that\u00a0Dell PowerFlex<\/a>\u00a0is now available in the\u00a0AWS Marketplace,\u00a0enabling customer\u2019s to utilize PowerFlex\u2019s performance, scale, resilience and management.<\/p>\n

Dell\u2019s data protection solutions \u2014 including\u00a0APEX Backup Services<\/a>,\u00a0PowerProtect Data Manager<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0PowerProtect Cyber Recovery<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 are also important services AWS customers can utilize, as data security threats on the cloud continue to grow.<\/p>\n

Brian Henderson<\/a> (pictured, right), director of unstructured data storage product marketing at Dell, and\u00a0Marc Trimuschat<\/a> (pictured, left), direct and worldwide cloud storage go-to-market specialists at AWS,\u00a0spoke with theCUBE industry analysts\u00a0Lisa Martin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Dave Vellante<\/a>\u00a0at the recent\u00a0<\/span>AWS re:Invent<\/span><\/a>\u00a0conference, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio.\u00a0(* Disclosure below.)<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

They discussed the partnership between AWS and Dell, data protection and security, and what the AWS\/Dell partnership has done to support customer cloud journies.\u00a0<\/span>[The following content has been condensed for clarity.]<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Martin: Talk about the role, from Amazon\u2019s point of view, that third-party vendors like Dell plays in AWS\u2019 expanding vision of cloud.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trimuschat: What we\u2019re seeing today is a shift to \u2026 more traditional enterprise customers who are demanding the performance, the scalability and also the resiliency of what they had on-premises, and they want that on the cloud as well. Another big trend that we\u2019re seeing is customers being affected by things like \u2026 malware events \u2026 and data protection. Dell provides some great solutions in both those areas that allow enterprise customers to really experience that mission-critical capability and resiliency that they have on-premises in the cloud.<\/p>\n

Vellante:\u00a0<\/strong>The question for you on PowerFlex is, why should customers start there on the cloud if they are early in this journey?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Henderson: If you\u2019re cloud-native, the advantage would be things like a really, really advanced block file system that has been built from the ground up to be software defined and \u2026 cloud-native. What you\u2019re getting is that really linear scale up to about 1,000 nodes. You can span that across regions, across Availability Zones, so it\u2019s highly resilient. So if there\u2019s a node failure in one site, you\u2019re going to rebuild really fast, depending on the size of that cluster. We didn\u2019t have to change a single line of code to run this product in the cloud because it was cloud-native by default.<\/p>\n

Vellante: How does Dell\u2019s APEX Backup Services fit in here? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Henderson: So APEX is the categorization for all the things that we\u2019re doing around a modern cloud experience for Dell customers. So we\u2019re taking them also on a journey. So everything that we\u2019re doing around \u2026 enterprise software capabilities in the cloud \u2026 it\u2019s all under that APEX umbrella and journey. So we\u2019re kind of still just getting started there, but we\u2019re seeing a lot of great traction.<\/p>\n

Martin: Do you have a favorite customer story that you think really shines the light on the value of the Dell\/AWS partnership in terms of the business impact they\u2019re making?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Henderson: We have several large customers. One of them is a very large video game production company. And we do a lot of work together where they\u2019re rendering \u2026 in house, they\u2019re sending to a shared location, they\u2019re copying data over to S3, they\u2019re able to let all their editors access that. They bring it back when it\u2019s compressed down a little bit and deliver that.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re also doing a lot of work with \u2026 Amazon Thursday Night Football<\/a>. What they\u2019ve done there, it\u2019s a partner of ours working with AWS. All the details inside of that roaming truck that they drive around, there\u2019s a lot of Dell gear within there. And then everything connects back to AWS for that exact same kind of model. We need to get to the editors on a nightly basis. They\u2019re also streaming directly from that truck while they\u2019re enabling the editors to access a shared copy of it, so it\u2019s really powerful stuff.<\/p>\n
