Google has confirmed that the\u00a0December 2022 link spam update<\/a>\u00a0is now finished rolling out. The update took 29 days to roll out, starting on December 14, 2022 and ending on January 12, 2023. Google has\u00a0posted\u00a0it was completed today, January 12.<\/p>\n

What is a link spam update. <\/strong>A link spam update looks to neutralize, or no longer count, links that Google finds to be spammy and against Google\u2019s guidelines. Google\u00a0wrote<\/a> that this launch \u201cmay change as spammy links are neutralized and any credit passed by these unnatural links are lost. This launch will affect all languages.\u201d<\/p>\n

First time using SpamBrain for links. <\/strong>This is leveraging what Google calls\u00a0SpamBrain<\/a>, Google referenced it in the\u00a02018 Google spam report<\/a>, specifically the\u00a0spam trends section<\/a>\u00a0where Google talks about its \u201cmachine learning systems\u201d to improve search spam detection.<\/p>\n

Google added that SpamBrain can not only \u201cdetect spam directly, it can now detect both sites buying links, and sites used for the purpose of passing outgoing links.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nullifying link spam.\u00a0<\/strong> Google used the word \u201cneutralize\u201d links, and in the previous link spam update<\/a> Google used the word Google used here was \u201cnullifying,\u201d which does not necessarily mean \u201cpenalize,\u201d but instead, to ignore or simply not count. Google\u2019s efforts around link spam have been to ignore and not count spammy links since\u00a0Penguin 4.0<\/a>\u00a0was released in 2016.<\/p>\n

Why we care.<\/strong> If you saw ranking declines in Google over this rollout period, it might be related to this new link spam update. Ensure your links are natural and follow Google\u2019s webmaster guidelines. Work on improving your site to naturally attract new links over time.<\/p>\n

As Google wrote with\u00a0previous<\/a>\u00a0link spam updates, \u201cSite owners should ensure that they follow the best practices on links, both incoming and outgoing. Focusing on producing high quality content and improving user experience always wins out compared to manipulating links.
