This is ultimately a good thing because it ensures we\u2019re having consensual conversations with our people and not bothering folks who are likely never going to convert. <\/p>\n<p>However, not all industries can use all audiences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This guide will cover:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The difference between native audiences and first-party data.<\/li>\n<li>Strategies to acquire first-party audiences.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>How to marry audiences with the right messaging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is the difference between native audiences and first-party data?<\/h2>\n<p>Before we dive into audience strategy, it\u2019s important to understand the difference between native audiences and the ones we build off of first-party data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Native audiences use behavioral data sourced from consent-based:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Search queries.<\/li>\n<li>Sites visited.<\/li>\n<li>Locations visited<\/li>\n<li>Past purchasing behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Persona models and machine learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These sources fuel audiences like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In-market<\/strong>: Displays a strong probability of being interested in the product or service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Life events<\/strong>: represents a high probability of going through a major milestone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Affinity<\/strong>: Likely interested in overarching hobbies\/goods\/services.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Custom intent<\/strong>: Advertiser-influenced audiences based on search terms or sites visited.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Similar audiences<\/strong> (no longer targetable on its own): High probability of being similar to a first-party audience group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Native audiences are built into smart bidding and represent a big reason to delegate bids to ad networks. However, given that their viability hinges on user consent, sometimes they struggle to staff or can\u2019t be used by some industries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Advertisers can use observation mode to see which native audiences make up their traffic and exclude some audiences known to be undesirable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While you can set a target and observe to exclusively target native audiences, it means forfeiting the built-in algorithmic audiences. As such, it\u2019s typically better to use native audiences in one of two ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exclude unnecessary audiences and allow smart bidding to find your best people.<\/li>\n<li>Use manual bidding and leverage native audiences as bid adjustments via observation mode.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the other hand, you can leverage your own data to build audiences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/capturing-first-party-data-search-389342\">First-party data (FPD) audiences<\/a> rely on the following data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consent-driven emails\/phone numbers\/addresses (customer match).<\/li>\n<li>Website traffic\/conversions provided user consent is secured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>FPD audiences can be applied in the same ways as native, however, they also allow for more one-to-one targeting. They are viable in paid and organic campaigns and should factor in quality score and cumulative layout shift (CLS). Both require pop-ups to be delayed at least 5 seconds, however, ideally you\u2019d wait at least 15 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>There are three basic strategies to contact info collection (outside of lead generation):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Entrance offers.<\/li>\n<li>Exit offers.<\/li>\n<li>Valued member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Entrance offers need to be engaging without being annoying. This can mean welcoming the user in your brand\u2019s voice or inviting them to play a game for a discount.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a general rule, you\u2019ll want to use two-step offer modules. By having the user \u201csay yes\u201d once, you\u2019re getting them in the habit of continuing to say yes. This means it can be applied to all user groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Part of crafting the best creative is being mindful of how visual content needs to be.
