Enterprises are sitting on top of a mass amount of data that they have no idea how to use.<\/p>\n

And even if they have access to it, they aren\u2019t au fait with what\u2019s actually inside the collections \u2014 so it\u2019s unworkable. This is according to a company that claims to catalog data automatically \u2014 and do it all within a 15-minute workload.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a \u201cmissing gap in the market that I wanted to fulfill,\u201d said veteran startup maven Shinji Kim<\/a> (pictured), founder and chief executive officer of Select Star. \u201cI saw lot of the issues starting to happen when enterprises are starting to try to use data.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kim previously launched streaming data startup Concord Systems, now owned by Akamai Technologies Inc.\u00a0and renamed IoT Edge Connect.\u00a0She spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Lisa Martin<\/a> and Paul Gillin<\/a> at the recent\u00a0AWS re:Invent<\/a>\u00a0conference, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed the concepts behind automated data discovery. (* Disclosure below.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Data discovery gap<\/h3>\n

Scaling data is no longer a challenge for the types of automotive and consumer electronics companies that Kim worked with at Concord Systems. They\u2019ve got a handle on that, and on collecting it, storing it and processing it, she stated. Cloud providers have been helping with those formerly difficult areas.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s the data discovery where there\u2019s still a hole: \u201cThere are a lot of customers out there looking for an easier, faster, time-to-value solution,\u201d she says of why she thinks the business has legs.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s getting harder and harder for people that want to utilize data, make decisions around data, and analyze data.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cloud data warehouses and data lakes are prime areas of focus, in part, because data from different sources is arriving there. But also it\u2019s the datum enterprises want to analyze.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a place where you can join other data sets within the same infrastructural umbrella,\u201d Kim stated.\u00a0\u201cWe act like Google for data scientists, data analysts and data engineers.\u201d<\/p>\n
