Often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/06\/09\/james_webb_meteoroid\/\">less than a single millimeter across<\/a>, they still have an impact velocity of 10km\/s, or 6.2 miles\/sec &#8211; enough to cause visible punctures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since its launch last year, the James Webb Space Telescope has suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/11\/21\/nasas_jwst_meteor_avoidance_plan\/\">14 measurable micrometeoroid hits<\/a> to its primary mirror, and it&#8217;s orbiting one million miles from Earth in the middle of space.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earth&#8217;s orbit is <a href=\"http:\/\/astria.tacc.utexas.edu\/AstriaGraph\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">far more crowded<\/a> with debris \u2013 both natural and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/11\/16\/russia_satellite_iss\/\">man made<\/a> \u2013 than JWST&#8217;s Lagrange point 2, meaning impacts are pretty common.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"crosshead\">No more emergencies, please<\/h3>\n<p>When spacecraft take crew to the ISS a careful balance is maintained ensuring there are the same number of seats as crew in case of an emergency evacuation. That hasn&#8217;t been the case since the micrometeor strike that bled all of MS-22&#8217;s coolant into space last month.<\/p>\n<p>In case such an accident happens between now and February 20, when MS-23 is scheduled to launch, MS-22 is going to have to serve as a lifeboat for Prokopyev, Petelin and Rubio, as the other craft docked at the station, a SpaceX Dragon capsule, doesn&#8217;t have extra seats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"adun\" id=\"story_eagle_xsm_sm_md_xmd_lg_xlg\" data-pos=\"mid\" data-raptor=\"eagle\" data-xsm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-sm=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-md=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xmd=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-lg=\",mpu,dmpu,\" data-xlg=\",mpu,dmpu,\">\n            <noscript><br \/>\n                <a href=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/jump?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_offbeat\/science&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y78CL59Ly@JRR5Ih4atx5AAAAIo&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n                    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/pubads.g.doubleclick.net\/gampad\/ad?co=1&amp;iu=\/6978\/reg_offbeat\/science&amp;sz=300x50%7C300x100%7C300x250%7C300x251%7C300x252%7C300x600%7C300x601&amp;tile=3&amp;c=33Y78CL59Ly@JRR5Ih4atx5AAAAIo&amp;t=ct%3Dns%26unitnum%3D3%26raptor%3Deagle%26pos%3Dmid%26test%3D0\" alt=\"\"\/><br \/>\n                <\/a><br \/>\n            <\/noscript>\n        <\/div>\n<p>Also onboard the ISS are four astronauts from SpaceX&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/10\/07\/spacex_crew5_iss\/\">Crew-5<\/a>, which docked in October.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With it already having a craft at the space station, NASA reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/12\/30\/nasa_iss_soyuz_rescue\/\">turned to SpaceX<\/a> in the immediate aftermath of the coolant leak to see if it could provide a ride to the stranded MS-22 crew, but circumstances made the possibility unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Along with not having enough seats, SpaceX Dragon capsules require astronauts to wear one of SpaceX&#8217;s tailored spacesuits, and the Soyuz crew doesn&#8217;t have a set.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s set to take off February 20, it&#8217;s unclear when the MS-22 crew will return to Earth in their new ride.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The MS-22 mission was planned to last 188 days from September 21, 2022, when it launched, meaning the crew was originally supposed to return in late March, shortly after the MS-23 crew would have arrived.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, according to Roscosmos, &#8220;The expedition of Sergey Prokopyev, Dmitry Petelin and Francisco Rubio to the ISS is being extended.&#8221;
