More Americans than ever before are expressing interest<\/a> in purchasing an electric or hybrid vehicle sometime in the future, while two of every five<\/a> personal car owners worldwide say they\u2019d be interested in going electric. But with all these EVs on the world\u2019s roads, we\u2019re forced to make one thing a priority: charging infrastructure.<\/p>\n

People wary of combustion engine bans<\/a> and EVs\u2019 recent popularity gains<\/a> aren\u2019t typically skeptical of EVs themselves. They\u2019re worried<\/a> about the feasibility of charging all the world\u2019s EVs, and for good reason. A new report by automotive market research firm S&P Global Mobility says the United States will require 2.3 million EV chargers by 2030. This isn\u2019t<\/i> including the chargers some EV owners have at home, which usually sit at level 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe transition to a vehicle market dominated with EVs will take years to fully develop, but it has begun,\u201d said analyst Ian McIlravey in S&P\u2019s statement<\/a>. \u201cWith the transition comes a need to evolve the public vehicle charging network, and today\u2019s charging infrastructure is insufficient to support a drastic increase in the number of EVs in operation.\u201d<\/p>\n

S&P estimates that there are about 126,500 level 2 and 20,431 level 3 fast chargers currently supporting the United States\u2019 1.9 million EVs. By 2025, the total number of EVs in operation could jump to 7.8 million; by 2030, that number is expected to become 28.3 million. Supporting such a drastic shift in the way we get around will require a total of 2.13 million level 2 chargers and 172,000 level 3 fast chargers, according to S&P\u2019s calculations. For those who don\u2019t want to do the math in their heads, that\u2019s 2,003,500 more level 2 chargers than we already have, and 151,569 more level 3 fast chargers.<\/p>\n

The level 2 chargers that we\u2019re most in need of use the type of 240-volt circuit found on an electric clothes dryer and can typically charge an EV within five hours. These are the chargers you normally see at shopping centers. Level 3 fast chargers require a more significant power grid connection but charge most EVs to 80% capacity within just 15 minutes. This means we can get by with fewer of them: Faster charge times mean less waiting for a charger to become available.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, several companies are working on this front. Tesla has been working to expand<\/a> its Supercharger network, while Mercedes-Benz announced<\/a> last week that it will be launching its own level 3 EV charging network. General Motors is likewise looking to install<\/a> a couple thousand fast chargers across the US.<\/p>\n

S&P makes the case that 2030 might feel like it\u2019s ages away, but when it comes to infrastructure changes, it\u2019s just around the corner. More mainstream<\/a> automakers<\/a> are embracing the EV shift, and with even the federal government switching<\/a> to EVs, it only makes sense that we\u2019re in dire need of more chargers than ever before.<\/p>\n
