And that&#8217;s what I&#8217;ll explain below.<\/p>\n<h2>Why marketing in-house makes way more sense<\/h2>\n<p>Think about it:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>You\u2019d never hire a sales agency to run your sales process.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You wouldn\u2019t hire a leadership agency to handle your decision-making.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\">So why do you hand over control of your marketing without flinching?<\/p>\n<p>Is an agency going to know your business and your industry the way you do? Is an agency going to understand your customers better than you can? Is an agency going to <em>sound<\/em> like you?<\/p>\n<p>Probably not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With a framework and some training, you can see way more marketing ROI than you can with an agency. All you have to do is produce honest, unbiased articles and videos that answer your customers\u2019 questions.<\/p>\n<p>Do this and you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/inbound-marketing-case-studies\/ais\"><span>out-punch the big boys<\/span><\/a> without writing a monthly check to an agency.<\/p>\n<h2>Tasks you should take care of in-house<\/h2>\n<p>For too long, we\u2019ve been convinced that marketing is best left to the experts. And it\u2019s true, marketing <em>should<\/em> be done by experts, but not marketing experts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The expertise that matters in marketing is industry experience and insight. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is what your customers actually want \u2014 not slick marketing tricks. And this expertise is what business leaders, sales managers, product designers, and service pros already have.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">You. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">You\u2019re the expert. <\/span><\/em>You know more about your industry and the work you do than any marketing agency ever could.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You also know your business \u2014 its history, its culture, its style.<\/p>\n<p>You and your team are the experts who should handle your marketing. You just need a little bit of training and know-how.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/hubfs\/expertise%20that%20matters.jpg\" alt=\"expertise that matters\" width=\"650\" height=\"254\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"height: auto; max-width: 100%; width: 650px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; display: block;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re up to speed, you should handle all of this stuff in-house:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Blog content<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Videos<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Sales enablement materials<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Emails\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Social media posts<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Website copy<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Keyword research<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Marketing automation<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Simple webpage design and updating<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Data analytics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t need an agency to do these things for you. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/content-manager-duties\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Your team will be able to do all of this on its own<\/span><\/a>. And the results will be more authentic and effective.<\/p>\n<h2>Tasks you might want to outsource<\/h2>\n<p>But at the same time, I\u2019m a realist. I don\u2019t think you should hire a new team member for <em>every<\/em> marketing task in front of you.<\/p>\n<p>So, how do you know the difference between <strong>the needs to hire for<\/strong> and <strong>the needs you can use freelancers or specialists to take care of<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I tell my clients to use this formula. You should outsource a task if it checks these two boxes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\">It\u2019s something that\u2019s highly technical<\/li>\n<li aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\">It\u2019s something that you don\u2019t have to do very frequently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Outsourcing only makes sense if your task checks <em>both<\/em> boxes. So, highly technical AND infrequent.<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s something highly technical that you need to be done all the time, you should hire a team member. You\u2019ll pay less and get more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s an infrequent task that\u2019s not highly technical, you should deputize someone on your team to learn how to do it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s both. That is, both highly technical <em>and<\/em> infrequent, you should think about finding an outside expert to help you.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/hubfs\/when-to-outsource.jpg\" alt=\"when-to-outsource\" width=\"650\" height=\"254\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"height: auto; max-width: 100%; width: 650px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; display: block;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>So, what types of tasks are these? Your needs will be unique, but some examples my clients face are:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Website redesigns<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Technical SEO audits<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Complex software integrations\u00a0<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Major rebranding<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Occasional graphic design work<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Tactical paid media ad campaigns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It makes sense. Building a website requires specific skills that your company probably doesn\u2019t need on a regular basis \u2014 and those skills are pricey. Most SMBs won\u2019t need a dedicated coder on staff, and it doesn&#8217;t make sense to keep that coder on the payroll so they can handle your twice-per-decade website redesign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, this checks both boxes: Technical and infrequent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You should use this same rationale for any task you\u2019re evaluating.<\/p>\n<p>But you should always be striving to bring more tasks in house. Train your team to learn and do more.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the tasks you outsourced last year you might not need to outsource next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>As you grow, your team should too<\/h2>\n<p>Keep in mind that your in-house marketing team should grow as your business grows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Let me give you an example:<\/p>\n<p>Ohio-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/inbound-marketing-case-studies\/fire-and-ice\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Fire &amp; Ice Heating and Cooling<\/span><\/a>. They\u2019re a client of ours.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">As recently as 2020, Fire &amp; Ice didn\u2019t have a single team member focused on marketing.<\/span> They started with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/is-hiring-a-content-manager-worth-the-cost-really\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">content manager<\/a> to write articles and emails. Then they added a videographer. And things started to take off. As their company grew, so did their marketing team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They had more tasks they needed to get done \u2014 so their team needed to grow.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Fire &amp; Ice has a marketing team of six:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Marketing manager<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Content writer<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Two-person video team<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Graphic designer<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Social media manager<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They never should have hired a six-person team in 2020. And the one-person marketing team that suited their needs a few years ago would\u2019ve held them back if they didn\u2019t add to it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>(If you want to learn more, here&#8217;s their full story:)<\/p>\n<div class=\"hs-embed-wrapper\" data-service=\"play.vidyard\" data-script-embed=\"true\" data-responsive=\"true\" style=\"position: relative; overflow: hidden; width: 100%; height: auto; padding: 0px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 256px; display: block; margin: auto;\">\n<div class=\"hs-embed-content-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%; margin: auto; display: block;\" class=\"vidyard-player-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/play.vidyard.com\/VyfDqPuJcYCP79owGzkg1k.jpg\" data-uuid=\"VyfDqPuJcYCP79owGzkg1k\" data-v=\"4\" data-type=\"lightbox\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Every team will scale in its own way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Adding new roles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For some, you\u2019ll need to add team members to bring more and more tasks in house.<\/p>\n<p>For example, as you grow, it might start to make sense to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/hiring-in-house-website-specialist\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>have a website specialist in house<\/span><\/a>, or it might make sense to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/blog\/do-i-need-to-hire-a-hubspot-specialist\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span>hire a HubSpot admin<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Adding more depth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For others, you might need to double up certain positions to meet more demanding needs.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, you\u2019re not adding new positions, you\u2019re adding headcount. One videographer turns into a two-person video team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/mailinvest.blog\/wp-content\/themes\/breek\/assets\/images\/transparent.gif\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.impactplus.com\/hubfs\/Jan.%20Blog%20Graphics%20(1).gif\" alt=\"company-grew-team-grew\" width=\"650\" height=\"254\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"height: auto; max-width: 100%; width: 650px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; display: block;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Just keep in mind that the team you have today might not be the team you need a few years from now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Outsource for the short term, hire for the future<\/h2>\n<p>If you need something now that your team can\u2019t handle, look to an outside specialist for help.
