Last September, US Secretary Antony Blinken and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo met with Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2022\/09\/14\/us_mexico_chips_batteries\/\">discuss<\/a> aligning US chip production with the nation&#8217;s lithium industry with the goal of bolstering North American EV production.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico is home to the 10th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/country-commercial-guides\/mexico-mining-and-minerals\" rel=\"nofollow\">largest<\/a> lithium deposits globally and recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/mexico-creates-state-run-lithium-company-go-live-within-6-months-2022-08-24\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">moved<\/a> to nationalize the mining of those resources.<\/p>\n<p>However, as Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/energy-politics-cloud-mexican-bid-join-us-semiconductor-rush-2022-12-14\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">reports<\/a>, disputes over Mexican energy policies have derailed talks up to this point. The US and Canadian leaders have taken issue with L\u00f3pez Obrador&#8217;s decision to prioritize its struggling state energy companies, which remain heavily reliant on fossil fuels. This has reportedly made investment in Mexico a tricky affair for companies trying aggressively to reduce their carbon footprints.<\/p>\n<p>To this end, the three countries committed to several clean energy initiatives during this week&#8217;s summit. Chief among them are measures to cut methane emissions \u2014 a potent greenhouse gas \u2014 by 15 percent by 2030 from 2020 levels, establish a North American clean hydrogen market, and install EV charging infrastructure along international borders.
