So why read mine? <\/p>\n<p>As a professional writer, I\u2019ve used Grammarly <em>a lot<\/em>. I\u2019ve been using Grammarly since 2018 and wouldn\u2019t recommend it if I didn\u2019t love it.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-is-Grammarly\"\/>What is Grammarly?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dananicoledesigns.com\/recommend\/grammarly\/\">Grammarly<\/a> is a popular AI-powered editor that edits and refines your writing.<\/p>\n<p>It has three plans: free, premium, and business.<\/p>\n<p>Grammarly\u2019s free version helps detect spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors, helps you remove unnecessary filler words, and detects your tone so you know if you\u2019re writing style is appropriate for your audience.<\/p>\n<p>The free plan is a great place to start to get familiar with how Grammarly works.<\/p>\n<p>But today, we\u2019re talking about <strong>Grammarly Premium<\/strong>, and as you\u2019ll soon discover, Grammarly Premium does <em>much <\/em>more than check for misspellings and grammatical errors.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who-is-Grammarly-for\"\/>Who is Grammarly for?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>In short, Grammarly is for anyone who writes. But from my experience, there are a few groups of people who get the biggest bang for their buck from Grammarly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u2714\ufe0fStudents<\/strong>: students of all ages can use Grammarly to edit papers and other written homework. The Citation Generator is particularly useful for generating citations (something I wish I had back in my day as a student).<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2714\ufe0fBloggers<\/strong>: bloggers will find Grammarly useful to help them edit and polish blog posts and other writing, like landing pages, social media posts, or pitches to brands.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2714\ufe0fWriters<\/strong>: writers will find all of Grammarly\u2019s features useful, especially those to catch minor mistakes before passing their work off to their human editors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2714\ufe0fMarketers and content teams<\/strong>: marketers can use Grammarly to review and edit any content and copy they receive from freelancers, along with the plagiarism checker to ensure everything they publish is 100% original.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2714\ufe0fBusiness owners<\/strong>: business owners can use Grammarly to review and edit emails they send, like pitches, proposals, and any other written work they need help refining.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why-I-swear-by-Grammarly-as-a-professional-writer\"\/>Why I swear by Grammarly as a professional writer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>As a writer, I have high expectations for the writing tools I use.<\/p>\n<p>After all, my clients pay me to write, and I need to deliver exceptional results. My fingers soar over the keyboard faster than my brain can keep up, and I\u2019m not embarrassed to admit that I need Grammarly to catch those pesky errors that fly under my radar.<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention, Grammarly saves me time. Instead of combing through 10 million words to ensure I didn\u2019t use <em>apart <\/em>instead of <em>a<\/em> <em>part<\/em>, I can do other things with the time I save. Much better things\u2014like curling up with a heated blanket and watching <em>When Harry Met Sally<\/em> for the tenth time. Aside from errors, Grammarly helps me tighten my writing (I\u2019ll show you how in a bit).<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s me. And I don\u2019t want to speak for you. This feature isn\u2019t Grammarly\u2019s selling point, but it\u2019s still useful. Although, if I\u2019m being honest, most computers have spelling and grammar checkers baked into their software, and this feature alone isn\u2019t enough to make Grammarly stand out.<\/p>\n<p>However, basic spell checkers only look for spelling and can\u2019t identify instances where you may have used the <em>wrong<\/em> word. <\/p>\n<p>Take the sentence below, for instance. It reads, \u201c<em>it would be great if you could have something to <\/em><strong><em>be <\/em><\/strong><em>before\u2026<\/em>\u201d Grammarly immediately alerted me to this error, prompting me to change<em> be <\/em>to<em> me.<\/em> Funny enough, I didn\u2019t make that error on purpose for the sake of this review. They simply alert you when you\u2019ve misspelled <em>cheese <\/em>as <em>chese<\/em>. But Grammarly does, which is why it outshines other grammar checkers.<\/p>\n<p>Next, with Grammarly\u2019s extension installed, you can double-click on any word within your document, and Grammarly will provide a list of suitable synonyms (peep the screenshot below for a list of <em>suitable <\/em>synonmyns). Although I\u2019m Canadian, I write in US English for my clients, so I greatly lean on this feature. <\/p>\n<p>You can toggle the editor between American, British, Canadian, and Australian English as computer\u2019s native spellchecker missed.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Spot-and-fix-poor-sentence-structure\"\/>Spot and fix poor sentence structure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Clunky sentences are hard to read and make it even harder to get your point across. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a student, that might mean the person grading your paper has difficulty understanding what you\u2019re trying to say, resulting in a poor grade. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a blogger, it could mean your reader leaves your site and doesn\u2019t become a subscriber.<\/p>\n<p>But Grammarly can spot sentences with poor structure, highlight them, and suggest improvements.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example from this very blog post:<\/p>\n<figure sentences to active ones.<\/p>\n<p>In the example below, Grammarly is flagging a sentence which reads, \u201c<em>\u2026and then the pen was thrown.<\/em>\u201c<\/p>\n<p>To which Grammarly, suggests As such, your writing will sparkle.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Check-for-plagiarism\"\/>Check for plagiarism<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Everyone needs a plagiarism checker, whether you think you do or not. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a student writing papers, you may unintentionally use the same phrases from something you previously read that your brain stored away in your subconscious. If you\u2019re a content manager, you need to check every piece of writing that lands on your desk to ensure everything you publish is original.<\/p>\n<p>Grammarly\u2019s plagiarism checker is both useful for everyone and easy to use.<\/p>\n<p>In Grammarly\u2019s editor, I pasted some text from a published blog post of mine. Your mind will be at ease knowing the words on your page are uniquely yours.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cite-your-sources\"\/>Cite your sources<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Citing sources is a tedious task for students. There are different ways to format your citations, and remembering them is tricky.<\/p>\n<p>To use Grammarly\u2019s Citation Generator, select the citation style, choose which piece of work you are citing, and enter the information. The browser extensions are also available on the free version of Grammarly so anyone can use them.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft-Word\"\/>Microsoft Word<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Grammarly\u2019s Premium version trumps Word\u2019s native editor; luckily, you can use it within Microsoft Word to check your documents. It\u2019s easy to install and doesn\u2019t require any technical know-how.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Windows-and-Mac-laptops\"\/>Windows and Mac laptops<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>No matter which operating system you use, Grammarly has you covered. To get Grammarly working in Google Docs, all you need is the browser extension.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where-Grammarly-needs-improvement\"\/>Where Grammarly needs improvement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>This Grammarly review wouldn\u2019t be complete without a list of improvements. Here\u2019s what I think they can improve:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grammarly-only-supports-English\"\/>Grammarly only supports English<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Unfortunately, Grammarly doesn\u2019t work have multilingual capabilities. I hope this is something we can see down the road so more users can benefit from and use Grammarly.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Users-might-get-too-caught-up-with-the-grading-systems\"\/>Users might get too caught up with the grading systems<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Some people get <em>too <\/em>caught up with grading systems and feel they need to reach a perfect score. And if they can\u2019t, they get stuck with analysis paralysis.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re new to writing or aren\u2019t confident with your writing chops, keep in mind that a good piece of writing doesn\u2019t need a score of 100 from Grammarly. <\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grammarly-for-Google-Docs-is-still-in-beta-mode\"\/>Grammarly for Google Docs is still in beta mode<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>To be honest, I\u2019m unsure why Grammarly for Google Docs is still in beta mode as of 2022\/2023. I\u2019ve been using Grammarly for several years in Google Docs, and it works fine, so it\u2019s not a huge deal, but it does make me wonder <em>why<\/em> it\u2019s still in beta mode.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grammarly-lags-in-long-documents\"\/>Grammarly lags in long documents<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h3>\n<p>Whenever I need to edit long docs, like book manuscripts, Grammarly gets a bit slow. I don\u2019t edit books often, so this isn\u2019t a problem I encounter day-to-day Usually, the text I\u2019m editing is around 3,000 words and Grammarly doesn\u2019t lag at that amount. Still, it would be nice if it didn\u2019t lag when I open up a 90,000-word doc.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grammarly-versus-a-human-editor-which-is-better\"\/>Grammarly versus a human editor: which is better?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Grammarly isn\u2019t trying to replace human editors, nor could it. But Grammarly is still a highly-powerful tool that complements what editors do.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, editors are best when used to refine your writing and bring it to the next level. They ask critical questions, challenge your assumptions, and kill your darlings. Grammarly\u2019s purpose isn\u2019t to do that (and I\u2019m not sure AI will ever be able to do that\u2014which is fine).<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Grammarly ensures your writing is squeaky clean. You don\u2019t need to worry about misplaced commas, funky misspellings, or run-on sentences that leave your reader out of breath. Grammarly handles it all for you.<\/p>\n<p>As an added bonus, the more you use Grammarly, the more familiar you\u2019ll become with grammar rules and stylistic writing. When I first started writing, I didn\u2019t know what passive voice was (I come from a marketing background, not a language arts background).
