It\u2019s easy to forget the down-to-earth reality that there\u2019s no cloud computing without hardware.<\/p>\n

Containerization and deployment with Kubernetes frees applications from the underlying infrastructure. But, in most cases, the storage remains tethered in place, causing problems for companies dealing with data in a multicloud environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where storage systems like MinIO come into play, where you can just take the storage and deploy it wherever you go,\u201d said Garima Kapoor<\/a> (pictured), co-founder and chief operating officer of Minio Inc. \u201cJust like Kubernetes is for compute, MinIO is for storage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kapoor spoke with theCUBE industry analysts John Furrier<\/a> and Dave Vellante<\/a> at the recent\u00a0VMware Explore<\/a>\u00a0event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media\u2019s livestreaming studio. They discussed how MinIO acts as a foundational layer to facilitate multicloud. (* Disclosure below.)<\/em><\/p>\n

A case for MinIO as the foundational layer for multicloud<\/h3>\n

As organizations become data-driven, they need a data storage system that is simple, scalable,and high performant, Kapoor explained. Object storage is the obvious choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen AWS was launched, S3 was the foundation layer,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, object storage is the foundation of any cloud that you go with.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also the data storage format of choice for high-performance big data, artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven new-age applications like Snowflake and Databricks, they\u2019re not built on SAN or file system, right? They\u2019re all built on object storage,\u201d Kapoor said.<\/p>\n

MinIO prides itself on being the leader in high-performance object storage, according to Kapoor. This positions the company to provide a consistent storage layer that allows companies to share data across clouds via industry-standard APIs without worrying about compatibility issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can just deploy it around with your application without a single line of code changed,\u201d Kapoor stated.<\/p>\n

This simplicity is important to woo developers who wield increasing amounts of decision-making influence within companies and demand simplicity above all else.<\/p>\n

\u201cMinIO, because it\u2019s open source, it\u2019s simple enough to start deploying object storage and cloud-native applications on top,\u201d Kapoor said. \u201cWe have around 1.3 million Docker downloads a day, so we own the developer market overall.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a plus for enterprise information technology-focused companies like VMware Inc. that are attempting to attract developers\u2019 attention to their solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can just bring your applications directly onto MinIO,\u201d Kapoor stated. \u201cYou can just lift and shift that application and deploy it wherever you need it to be, whether it is Azure Blob [storage], whether it is Google Cloud, or even on edge.\u201d<\/p>\n
