What Does Fast Startup Do in Windows 10?<\/h2>\n

As the name implies, Fast Startup allows you to boot up your computer faster<\/a>.\u00a0It achieves faster speeds by combining a regular shutdown and hibernation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When Fast Startup mode is enabled and you turn off your PC<\/a>, Windows saves the system kernel, drivers, and current system state to a hibernation file<\/a>. Unlike proper hibernation, your login sessions and apps aren\u2019t saved.<\/p>\n

Then, when you turn your machine back on<\/a>, those saved items (kernel, drivers, and system state) are loaded into the RAM<\/a>, allowing you to quickly get to your desktop. This is basically how this feature works on your Windows 10 PC.<\/p>\n

Why Disable Fast Startup?<\/h2>\n

Despite the benefits it brings, there are multiple reasons you may want to disable Fast Startup on your Windows 10 laptop<\/a> or desktop. One is that it can\u00a0prevent you from installing Windows updates<\/a>. This happens because an update requires a full shutdown<\/a> to be brought into effect. A reboot<\/a> will complete the installation while Fast Startup is enabled, but a shutdown won\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Another case where you might want to disable Fast Startup is when you have trouble managing\u00a0encrypted disk images<\/a>. You may also want to turn off this feature if you dual-boot your PC<\/a> and want access to your Windows drive while you\u2019re running your secondary operating system<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you want to\u00a0access your BIOS\/UEFI settings<\/a>, sometimes it\u2019s not possible when Fast Startup is enabled. So if you\u2019re having trouble entering the BIOS, you may need to toggle off Fast Startup before you can proceed.<\/p>\n

How to Turn Off Windows 10\u2019s Fast Boot Feature<\/h2>\n

To disable Fast Startup, first, right-click<\/a> your \u201cStart\u201d menu icon and choose \u201cPower Options.\u201d<\/p>\n
