You can learn from our bickering over who\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In Geoff\u2019s house in San Francisco, the thermostat, light switches, smoke alarms, doorbell, speakers, baby monitor, garage door, air pollution monitor, sprinkler controllers, meat thermometer, clock, TV and an electric bicycle are connected and can be controlled with an app or his voice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">In my New York City apartment, I flip on lights, air conditioning and music on devices that don\u2019t touch the internet and that I operate with my hands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">I think Geoff lives in a nerd paradise with pointless garbage gadgets. He thinks I\u2019m a crusty old lady muttering about why anyone needs luxuries like ice boxes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">I hope that our friendly disagreement gives you a glimpse at the promise and the pitfalls of how technology could change your home life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Smart-home devices can make your living spaces more comfortable and convenient \u2014 or frustrate you, compromise your privacy and turn us into sloths and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2020\/02\/18\/ring-nest-surveillance-doorbell-camera\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> paranoiacs<\/a>. Geoff has tested nearly every smart-home gadget imaginable, and learned the hard way what is worthwhile, what isn\u2019t and how you can tell the difference. This is an edited transcript of our needling conversation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><i><b>Shira: <\/b><\/i><i>Seriously, Geoff, WHY do you have so many smart home thingies? What\u2019s useful about trading the simplicity of a light switch or a clock for supposedly smart versions?<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>Geoff: <\/b>The magic of these devices is automating tasks and leaving me fewer things to think about. My Lutron Caseta light switches turn themselves off at certain times or when no one is home. That cuts my energy bill, and, yes, it\u2019s also convenient.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">My current favorite smart home use: I can say \u201cwind down\u201d in my baby\u2019s room and the lights slowly ramp down to give my munchkin the visual cue that it\u2019s time for bed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">It might sound weird, but I love my connected Weber iGrill thermometer. I have a smoker, and the Bluetooth thermometer pings my phone when the meat reaches my target temperature so I don\u2019t have to keep peeking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><i><b>Shira: <\/b><\/i><i>I admit, that sounds handy. But is this stuff worth the complexity and the complications? Are you locked out of your house when your internet conks out? And what\u2019s wrong with low-tech automation? I have a light in my living room with a simple sensor that detects when it\u2019s getting dark and flips on the light.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>Geoff: <\/b>The best of my home products make life simpler. Remember how hard thermostats used to be to operate, with those little tabs you pushed? Then the Nest came along and just figured out on its own when you did and didn\u2019t need heat. And if you wanted more you could just turn a giant dial like on an iPod.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">But not all of these products are an improvement. Connected color-changing lightbulbs sound groovy, but smart bulbs don\u2019t work unless the wall switch is flipped on all the time. They annoyed the heck out of my family members and house guests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><i><b>Shira: <\/b><\/i><i>Okay, what advice do you have to make sure we\u2019re buying actually helpful smart-home gadgets?<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>Geoff:<\/b> I would have so much fun making a techie home improvement show. If I did \u201cExtreme Nerd Home Makeover,\u201d I\u2019d have a few golden rules:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">1) Don\u2019t fall in the app trap! Be wary of installing any critical home feature that only works with an app. You need to be able to unlock your door or turn on lights the old fashioned way when friends visit or when the internet goes down. This is why I stopped using Philips Hue bulbs, even though I know they have many fans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">2) Build your smart home in Switzerland \u2026 metaphorically. Many of these products<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2021\/09\/29\/smart-home-monopoly\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> limit your options<\/a>. For example, Amazon\u2019s smart plugs only work with Alexa. You might love Alexa today, but you don\u2019t know what voice AI, smartphone or face computer you might be using in five years. If you can, try to pick products that say they work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit <i>and<\/i> a new<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22832127\/matter-smart-home-products-thread-wifi-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> smart home standard called Matter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">(Note: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">3) Look out for spies. Any digital product will suck up information about you, but some companies collect and store a suspiciously large amount of data. I\u2019m looking at you,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/interactive\/2022\/amazon-smart-home\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Amazon<\/a>. In some cases, you can adjust settings to tell them to collect less data \u2014 our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/interactive\/2021\/privacy-settings-guide\/?itid=sf_technology_personal-tech_privacy-reset_p005&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Privacy Reset guide<\/a> can help you. But the best products don\u2019t live in the cloud and collect as little data as possible, like ones made by the brand Eve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">4) Security is your responsibility. You need a different password and two-factor authentication for every home product, or you\u2019re<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2019\/04\/23\/how-nest-designed-keep-intruders-out-peoples-homes-effectively-allowed-hackers-get\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_33\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> inviting hackers<\/a> into<a href=\"https:\/\/krebsonsecurity.com\/2022\/12\/hacked-ring-cams-used-to-record-swatting-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> your home<\/a>. Shira, I can already tell you\u2019re about to say \u201cSee this is why a dumb home is good!\u201d But if you get this basic right, you\u2019ll be fine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><i><b>Shira: <\/b><\/i><i>Help me feel smug about my smart home skepticism. What smart devices are NOT worth it?<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>Geoff:<\/b> I\u2019ve tested or investigated many, many home gadgets that I didn\u2019t want to keep around.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The smart toilet is one. Just no. I also haven\u2019t been convinced that refrigerators, washing machines and microwaves get much better by adding a screen and an internet connection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">I don\u2019t have a smart door lock, in part because it kept failing on my old door. Nothing as essential as a lock should be subject to random gadget fails. I don\u2019t have a robot vacuum cleaner, either, because they suck at suction, you need one for each floor of your home, and they tend to chew on cords and rugs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\"><b>And more from the CES in Las Vegas:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/01\/04\/ces-2023\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_41\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b> Here\u2019s what we saw that was intriguing or weird. <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">You\u2019re probably already getting emergency alerts to your phone for major weather disasters, missing children or other threats near you. It\u2019s also worth signing up for notifications from your local governments with more frequent and detailed alerts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Text alerts aren\u2019t available everywhere in the United States, but you can try to add yourself to the list by texting your Zip code to 888777. Also Google the name of your state or county and \u201cemergency alerts\u201d for more options, which might include notifications about road and transit problems or earthquake warnings. (In New York, where I live, you can even receive emergency alerts by fax.
