Developed by Naughty Dog, <em>The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>tells the harrowing and emotional story of Joel, a hardened smuggler, and Ellie, a bright-eyed teen, who slowly become close as they fight to survive in a hellish, zombie-infested world. It\u2019s a tale that resonated deeply with people; <em>The Last of Us<\/em> went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_accolades_received_by_The_Last_of_Us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">garner more than 200 \u2018Game of the Year\u2019 awards<\/a> and spawn a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/elden-ring-surpasses-the-last-of-us-2-as-the-most-awarded-game-of-the-year-recipient\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similarly acclaimed sequel<\/a>. Together, they\u2019ve sold more than 37 million copies worldwide, and, for many, set the gold standard for prestige, narrative-driven gaming experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, then, Sony has been looking at many ways to adapt it for a wider audience, including, at one point,<a href=\"https:\/\/collider.com\/the-last-of-us-sam-raimi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0a scrapped film <\/a>helmed by original <em>Spider-Man\u00a0<\/em>trilogy director Sam Raimi. Some of these efforts go as far back as 2014, and during that time, Hollywood\u2019s interest in games has only increased. Netflix alone has such series as <em>Arcane<\/em>, <em>Cyberpunk: Edgerunners<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Castlevania <\/em>and <em>The Cuphead Show!<\/em>, and that\u2019s to say nothing of big-screen fare like <em>Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Pok\u00e9mon: Detective Pikachu<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Uncharted.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Last of Us | Official Trailer | HBO Max\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uLtkt8BonwM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>What makes HBO\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em> stand out, though, is the people involved. At a time when we have the showrunner of Paramount\u2019s <em>Halo <\/em>show<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/halo-showrunner-didnt-look-at-the-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0declaring that he didn\u2019t even look at the games<\/a>, the key creatives behind HBO\u2019s live-action adaptation of <em>The Last of Us<\/em> have a much more apparent love and understanding of the source material they\u2019re adapting and the gaming medium as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>First, there\u2019s Neil Druckmann, the co-writer and co-director of Naughty Dog\u2019s <em>The Last of Us<\/em>, who serves as co-creator, co-showrunner, co-writer and executive producer on the HBO series. It\u2019s practically unheard of to have one of the driving forces behind a game be so involved with its adaptation, especially when, in Druckmann\u2019s case, he already has his hands full serving as Naughty Dog co-president and director of a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/neil-druckmann-on-last-of-us-part-3-possibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> future, mysterious title<\/a>. His co-showrunner, Craig Mazin, is the Emmy-winning mind behind HBO\u2019s <em>Chernobyl\u00a0<\/em>who\u2019s also been quite candid about his affection for <em>The Last of Us <\/em>game, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/tv\/news\/the-last-of-us-craig-mazin-greatest-story-ever-told-video-games-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently calling it \u201cthe greatest story ever told in video games.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Druckmann, it\u2019s made all the difference to have someone like Mazin \u2014 both an avid fan of the source material and a proven screenwriter who knows the ins-and-outs of Hollywood \u2014 to be such a close collaborator on the series. The pair were introduced through a mutual friend, <em>Westworld<\/em>\u2018s Shannon Woodward, with whom Druckmann worked on\u00a0<em>The Last of Us Part II. <\/em>\u201cI can see the love and the passion and how he wanted to do this story justice \u2014 it started there. In between commitments at Naughty Dog\u2019s Santa Monica, California-based studio, Druckmann spent a fair amount of time in Alberta, where\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em> was filmed between June 2021 and 2022. With a rumoured budget of at least $100 million \u2014 a sum that rivals what HBO spent on several of <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>\u2019 individual seasons\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<em>The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>is believed to be the<a href=\"https:\/\/thegauntlet.ca\/2022\/02\/18\/the-last-of-us-filming-in-calgary-is-an-important-project-for-our-emerging-film-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> most expensive TV production in Canadian history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Druckmann, HBO enlisted a top-notch crew of Canadian talent, including \u201csome of the best prosthetic people, some of the best set designers, costume designers,\u201d to work on <em>The Last of Us.\u00a0<\/em>While he\u2019s quick to praise the crew now, he acknowledges that his reaction to their work has regularly left him speechless.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cMost importantly, we needed to feel the movement of Joel and Ellie through space and time\u201d \u2014 Mazin<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI often don\u2019t have the right words to describe that feeling,\u201d he says of what it was like to see his creations come to life. \u201cTo have our prop master come to me and be like, \u2018What do you think of this?\u2019 and they hand me Ellie\u2019s switchblade, and I\u2019m looking at it like, \u2018oh my God, I\u2019m holding Ellie\u2019s switchblade, don\u2019t freak out, just be serious and give him some notes!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That feeling only got \u201cbigger and bigger\u201d as he went from props to the actual Alberta sets.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Last of Us Invitation To Set | The Last of Us | HBO Max\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" data-lazy=\"true\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a7L8AGYAjrE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m standing inside Joel\u2019s house, and I\u2019m having to take a Zoom call with people back at Naughty Dog. And I\u2019m like, \u2018look at the sheets, look at the posters, look at their wallpaper\u2026 look how they\u2019re studying this thing that you\u2019ve all built and how they\u2019re honouring it!&#8217;\u201d I would often just pause in the middle of a set and just look around and be like, \u2018appreciate this \u2014 this thing that we\u2019ve made over here as a video game is inspiring all these other artists and craftsmen to just build this really beautiful other version of the story that can stand on its own just as strongly.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mazin adds that it was \u201cfantastic\u201d to shoot in Alberta, pointing out that it was a prime location to adapt <em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u2018 story, which is broken up into four chapters based on each season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, we needed to feel the movement of Joel and Ellie through space and time. Space means diversity of environment and time means seasons \u2014 it means weather. We needed snow, we got snow! We needed it to be cold, it was cold! But we also had the Canadian Rockies. We had <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/calgary\/the-last-of-us-filming-canmore-transformed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canmore<\/a>, which is a town that\u2019s a dead ringer for Jackson, Wyoming [one of the game\u2019s settings]. We needed people on horseback, no problem. We needed some of the best stunt people in the world \u2014 they were there [\u2026] While we were bringing crew in from Vancouver as well, there was an enormous amount of fantastic people working in Alberta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mazin says the production took the cast and crew all around the province, including Grand Prairie and Lethbridge. \u201cWe\u2019ve been everywhere, and it was a delight. And I miss Calgary and I miss all the folks there. Fittingly for a big HBO production,\u00a0<em>The Last of Us<\/em>\u2018 two leads are <em>Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/em>alums Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie). Pascal, of course, plays a spiritually similar role in <em>The Mandalorian,<\/em>\u00a0the titular protector of the infant colloquially known as \u201cBaby Yoda.\u201d Meanwhile,\u00a0<em>Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/em>saw Ramsey \u2014 who uses they\/them pronouns \u2014 portray Lyanna Mormont, a fierce and quick-witted teen not unlike Ellie.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of his prolific career, Pascal, in particular, has been a part of many big and beloved franchises, including the aforementioned <em>Star Wars<\/em> and <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>, as well as DC\u2019s <em>Wonder Woman 1984\u00a0<\/em>and Netflix\u2019s\u00a0<em>Narcos<\/em>. Even still, he notes that filming\u00a0<em>The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>in Alberta was special. Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ezy4OVHDag4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he raved about Banff on\u00a0<em>The Late Late Show with James Corden<\/em>,<\/a> and he was equally effusive when asked about the rest of the province.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cI feel like being there was essential to the experience \u2014 that we couldn\u2019t have done it anywhere else\u201d \u2014 Pascal<br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In his typical gentlemanly demeanour, though, he\u2019s quick to let Ramsey answer first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favourite place that we went to was Canmore for sure,\u201d they say, eliciting an excited response \u2014 \u201cI was gonna say Canmore!\u201d \u2014 from Pascal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, it was great!\u201d adds Ramsey, to which Pascal smiles and nods in agreement. \u201cWe went to Waterton as well. High River, Fort Macleod\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Pascal notes that they went \u201call over Alberta,\u201d he keeps coming back to Canmore. \u201cEvery inch of Canmore was just this magical little town\u2026 with really great fudge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never tried the fudge! There was never a moment where it felt like no one wanted to be there. Even on the really hard, long nights we spent shooting, everyone was so pleased to be there and passionate about the work we were collectively creating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like being there was essential to the experience \u2014 that we couldn\u2019t have done it anywhere else,\u201d adds Pascal. \u201cPhysically, for one, but also for our crew and the warmth and the dedication and everybody really in it together and caring as much. There wasn\u2019t a fraction of apathy in the entire experience, and honestly, it felt Canadian to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canadian connections aside, part of the wider appeal of HBO\u2019s <em>The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>adaptation for gamers is how Druckmann and Mazin have updated the story. While it\u2019s an overall faithful recreation of the first <em>The Last of Us\u00a0<\/em>game, the pair have also added material to expand upon what was originally there. Even if it\u2019s just a couple of brief scenes, you get to just see them be together, see them joke, see them read each other as brothers do,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was really, really great to do that \u2014 to start to just build the tissue of a very small, tight knit family that we intend for you to fall in love with very quickly so you can feel the pain with us when they get ripped apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tommy is an interesting character in that he\u2019s a major part of Joel\u2019s life both before and after the outbreak. That makes the role significant in and of itself, and Luna says he only felt closer to it due to his own experiences. That started with bonding with Pascal about their shared Hispanic backgrounds and upbringings in Texas, but he says he also related to Tommy due to his own family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just have a really superb script that depicts this brotherly connection, this relationship, this somewhat paternal relationship that Joel has not only to his daughter Sarah, but also to his younger brother, Tommy, which I can absolutely identify with, as an older brother myself. My father has been gone since before I was born. My mother was a 15-year-old widow when she had me. And so she very much sometimes is more like a sibling than she is a mother in that we\u2019re so kind of close in age,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I feel that I have to assume the role of patriarch and take care of my younger brother and younger sisters as a father would have. My mother raised my brother and was a single mother. And so there\u2019s that element, too \u2014 that Joel feels that he\u2019s the guy, he\u2019s the boss, he\u2019s the father figure, not only to his daughter, but to [Tommy] also. Her character is how Joel becomes introduced to Ellie, and she plays a pivotal role throughout the story.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cAt times, it still moves me to tears, as weird as that sounds, because I never expected that people would, again, put so much of themselves and honour it to this degree\u201d \u2014 Druckmann<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Naturally, this gives Dandridge a unique perspective among the cast, especially since acting in the original game meant having to imagine nearly everything while being in a largely empty motion-capture studio. While she says her background in theatre made such mo-cap work \u201ca natural fit,\u201d she was still in awe when she got to actually step foot in a physical recreation of the world of <em>The Last of Us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get up there in Alberta on the set and to tangibly be able to touch everything and feel the weight and hear the water drip and the texture of the sets and accuracy and beauty of the costumes \u2014 it was, at many times, deeply overwhelming. I know [Mazin] would always think of me as his litmus test and put me in front of things and I would have a visceral emotional reaction every single time! And, often, dissolve into a puddle of tears because one, as an artist, I\u2019m an open spirit, but I was, fundamentally, deeply moved by the clear love that all of the artists and designers had in every single detail of the show. So for me to know and love and have so much sentimentality for this and see it elucidated was highly emotional and joyful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even after years of developing the series, Druckmann says he still gets a similar feeling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt times, it still moves me to tears, as weird as that sounds, because I never expected that people would, again, put so much of themselves and honour it to this degree. And I love taking everything back to the Naughty Dog team and just showing them the stuff. I\u2019m like, \u2018the love that you\u2019ve given this thing is now translated over here.\u2019 And often, they\u2019re moved to tears when I show them this.
